This flag design is a new one, and was adopted in 2003. The crescent is retained from teh previous flag, but instead of having a crescent on a green field only, the crescent is located in a triangle. Four stripes were added to this new design to symbolize the four islands of the nation: yellow is for Moheli, white for Mayotte, red for Anjouan, and blue for Grand Comore. Likewise, the four stars stand for the four islands, while the crescent stands for Islam, which is the major religion on Comoros.
