The TecMilenio University (in Spanish: Universidad TecMilenio) is a private institution of higher education sponsored by the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education[1] and specialized in both corporate training and short degree programs. Founded in 2002 in order to provide a cheaper alternative to the high costs involved at pursuing a degree at the Institute[4] and fend-off the foreign for-profit schools that have entered the country in recent years,[4] the university serves some 21,000 students at high school, undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Campuses

As of 2008 the University has 39 small campuses distributed over several Mexican cities:[3]

Chiapas: Tapachula; Chihuahua: Camargo, Chihuahua, Cuauhtémoc, Juárez, Parral; Coahuila: Torreón (Laguna); Colima: Colima; Durango: Durango; Jalisco: Guadalajara (Guadalajara and Guadalajara Executive), Zapopan; Mexico City: Ferrería, Reforma; Michoacán: Morelia; Morelos: Cuautla, Cuernavaca; Nuevo León: Guadalupe, Monterrey (Cumbres, Las Torres), San Nicolás de los Garza; Puebla: Puebla; Querétaro: Santiago de Querétaro, San Juan del Río; Quintana Roo: Cancún; San Luis Potosí: San Luis Potosí; Sinaloa: Culiacán, Mazatlán; Sonora: Guaymas, Hermosillo, Navojoa, Obregón; State of México: Atlacomulco, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Toluca; Tabasco: Villahermosa; Tamaulipas: Matamoros, Reynosa; Veracruz: Veracruz; Yucatán: Mérida.

In addition, some of its programs are offered online.

Organization

A national rectorate is based in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and oversees eight vice-rectorates:[1]

  • Three internal vice-rectorates are in charge of academics and internal affairs.
  • Four regional vice-rectorates are in charge of all campuses in the northern, eastern, southern and western areas of the country.
  • A vice-rectorate is specialized in its distance education programs.

As of 2008, current rector is Alejandro Cisterna, who is being overseen by Carlos Cruz Limón, Rector of Innovation and Development of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.[1]

Mr Rangel Sostmann now wants to take the Tec's "brand" even further, by moving it into new segments of the market, and extend access. Thus, in smaller and poorer cities that do not have the resources to set up their own campus, there is a new brand: TecMilenio. Students at one of these facilities can combine study with work, and have most of their contact with professors via distance learning. There are no extra-curricular activities, no sports facilities. However, they use the same materials as students on campus, take the same exams and receive the same qualifications. Critically, they pay less.
