M. M. Akbar

M.Muhammad Akbar is a well-known Muslim Dawah (missionary) worker, author and speaker on Islam from the South Indian State of Kerala. He is a Physics graduate. Even though not an academic in religion Akbar has distinguished himself as perhaps the most noted Dawah activist in Kerala with his innovative approaches in introducing Islam in conducting speeches, seminars and debates with scholars of other religions as well as atheists and communists. His programs are noted for active participation by non-Muslim scholars as well as public.

He is the founder-director of the Dawah organization Niche of truth ([1]) and the editor of the monthly Sneha Samvadam. Sneha Samvadam stands out in presenting with a modern outlook issues in comparative religion, interreligious dialogues, apologetics, Islamic perspectives on various walks of life like morality, law, history, feminism, economics and so on as well as answering allegations against Islam. Snehasamvadam distinguishes itself in giving a free voice to anyone on Islam, even though simultaneously attempting to justify the Islamic perspectives.

M.M.Akbar’s works and speeches are noted for scholarly exposition of various religious scriptures including Judeo-Christian and Hindu scriptures as well as atheist and communist ideologies. His books on Bible and Hinduism titled “Bibilinte Daivikatha-Vimarshangal, Vasthuthakal” (Divinity of Bible-Criticisms and Truths) and “Haindavatha - Dharmavum Dharshanavum” (Hinduism – Religion and Ideology) respectively were critically acclaimed. He heavily relies on his Physics background in his works, especially in his arguments against atheism.

He has undoubtedly created a sensation among both Muslim as well as non-Muslim public in Kerala with his pioneering work in Islamic Dawah, even though the effectiveness of Niche of Truth in terms of the number of conversions effected is doubtful. M.M.Akbar has been criticized for his somewhat blunt presentation of missionary aspects in his speeches, even though his programs or works have not created much untowardly reactions or controversies.
