The earthquakes in 2010 have resulted in nearly 250,000 fatalities. Primarily, the 2010 Haiti Earthquake caused at least 230,000 deaths to that country, making it the 5th deadliest earthquake in recorded history. Also notable, the 2010 Chile earthquake registered a 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, ranking it the seventh strongest earthquake since 1900. The tsunami associated with the Chile earthquake caused tsunami advisories and warning across the entire Ocean rim, also known as the Ring of fire. There have so far been nine earthquakes that reached at least 6.0 magnitude, this article considers only quakes above 3.0 Magnitude allowed on this list.

January

  • Solomon Islands Solomon Islands were struck by a quake that occurred on January 3rd in the, there where no deaths, yet many were left homeless by the quake.[1]
  • Indonesia Java was struck by a 5.1 magnitude quake on January 10. One person died as a result of the quake.
  • United States Eureka was hit by a large 6.5 magnitude quake that was centered off the coast of Eureka, California, with dozens of injuries reported, yet no deaths. [2]
  • Venezuela Venezuela was struck by a 5.5 magnitude quake on January 15th. No deaths were reported.
  • Haiti Haiti was struck by a devastating magnitude 7.0 quake that struck on January 12th, killing up to 250,000 people, and affecting millions.
  • China China region of Guzhou was struck by a small 3.4 magnitude quake on January 18th, yet at least five people were killed.
  • China Sichuan was struck by a 5.1 magnitude quake on January 30th, seeing the death of one person, and leaving hundreds homeless in the eastern region of Sichuan.

February

  • United States Eureka, California was struck by a second quake on February 4th, with minor injuries & damage, thus no deaths.
  • United States Illinois was hit by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake on February 10, northwest of Chicago.
  • United States Hawaii was struck by a tiny 3.5 magnitude earthquake on February 23rd, no injuries, deaths, or damage were reported on the Big Island.
  • Japan Ryukyu Islands were hit by a significantly large 7.0 magnitude earthquake, seeing no deaths or injuries but some damage. [3] A tsunami warning was issued for the Naha prefecture.[4]
  • Chile Chile was struck by a large 8.8 magnitude earthquake on February 27th, seeing 400+ deaths in the region. [5]
  • Argentina Salta was struck by a large 6.3 magnitude earthquake on February 28th, yet it was completely unrelated to Chile's quake. At least two deaths resulted from this quake.

  • Taiwan Taiwan was struck by a Magnitude 6.4 earthquake strike on March 3rd.
  • Indonesia Sumatra was struck by a 6.8 Magnitude earthquake on March 5th.
  • Turkey Turkey was struck by a large 6.0 Magnitude earthquake which saw quite a few deaths, 50 and counting. [6]
  • United States Hawaii was struck by America's fifth quake in 2010, a 4.4 Magnitude earthquake.
  • Peru Lima was struck by a seemingly insignificantly large 6.3 Magnitude earthquake, that had no reported fatalities nor damage. [7]
  • Chile Chile was struck by another quake, a 6.9 Magnitude quake struck as the new president was been inaugurated into office.[8]
  • Indonesia Indonesia region of Kepulauan Obi was struck by a significantly large 6.3 Magnitude earthquake on March 14th.More Info
  • Cuba Cuba was struck by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake at 1:08pm on March 20th. [10]
