Emily Jane Browning (born 7 December 1988) is an Australian actress and model, known for her role as Violet Baudelaire in the 2004 film, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and as Anna Ivers in the 2009 film, The Uninvited. She won the 2005 AFI International Award for Best Actress for her role in A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Browning has won an AFI Young Actor's Award in 2002 and was nominated for the same award in 1999 and 2003. She was also nominated for Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Performer and Young Artist Awards Best Performance in a Feature Film, Leading Young Actress (both 2005).
Personal life
Browning was born in Melbourne, Victoria, the daughter of Shelley and Andrew Browning.[1] She has two younger brothers, Nicholas (eight years younger) and Matthew (nine years younger). She remains based in Melbourne, having taken a break from acting in order to complete her education at Eltham High School, where, in November 2006, she completed her Victorian Certificate of Education exams.[2]
Career
Emily Browning's acting career began at the age of eight years old when she was noticed by a classmate's father at a school play and he recommended that she pursue acting as a profession. Shortly afterwards, she won a role alongside Judy Davis in the Hallmark Television movie, The Echo of Thunder.[3] A successful career in Australian film and television productions soon followed, including The Man Who Sued God, in which she played the daughter of Billy Connolly's character. She later co-starred again with Connolly in A Series of Unfortunate Events, in which she played the role of Violet Baudelaire.[3] She has stated interest in doing a sequel of the movie A Series of Unfortunate Events although if a sequel was made, she would most likely not be cast as she has grown out of the role.
Browning had a recurring role as Hayley Fulton on the popular television series Blue Heelers from 2000 until 2002 and played the character Alicia in five episodes of Something in the Air (2000–2001). She also played Katie Harwood in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship; the same year she won an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Young Actress, and was nominated the following year.
In 2006, Browning appeared in the music video for Evermore's "Light Surrounding You".[4] In the making of video for the clip, the band stated, "...we suck as actors, so we decided to get Emily."[5]
She attended the L'Oreal Fashion Festival as festival ambassador on 1 February 2007.[6]
In 2009 she portrayed Anna in Paramount Pictures mystery horror film The Uninvited. The film is an American remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters. Starring alongside Elizabeth Banks and Arielle Kebbel, the film was released 30 January 2009 to negative reviews from critics, earning a lifetime gross of $40,563,148.
Browning was asked to audition for the role of Bella Swan in Twilight but due to exhaustion she decided not to audition.[7]
In 2009 it was announced Browning has signed on as Baby Doll in Zack Snyder's action film Sucker Punch. She replaced Amanda Seyfried who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The film also stars Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish and Vanessa Hudgens. Filming took place in Vancouver from September 2009 to January 2010.[8] The film is set for a 25 March 2011 release.[9]
Browning has signed on to play the lead in Sleeping Beauty by Australian author Julia Leigh, who will also direct the film.[10]
