The Venezuelan constitutional referendum of December 1999 was held on 15 December 1999 to ratify the proposed Constitution of Venezuela drafted by the 1999 National Constituent Assembly. The referendum coincided with the 14-16 December torrential rains which caused the Vargas tragedy in which tens of thousands of people died. The constitution was approved by around 72% of the voters, on a turnout of around 45%.
