"Hot" is a song performed by female Romanian recording artist Inna. The song was written and produced by native dance music trio Play & Win. It acts as her debut single and first single released from her debut studio album of the same name, Hot. It was released on CD and digital format through numerous record labels and across various countries in Europe as well as the United States. Most countries in which the song was released, the Play & Win radio edit was used as the official single version. "Hot" was first sent to radio stations in Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey and Hungary on December 23, 2008, after the November release in her home country. It is an up-tempo song with prominent electronic music and house music characteristics. The lyrics evoke a meaning of how strong of a connection one can have with one's lover.

The single has so far garnered success for Inna in Spain (where it was also certified Platinum), Ukraine and on the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay Chart in the United States where the single reached number one. It has also been a top ten hit in Belgium, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Russia and The Netherlands.

"Hot" has been accompanied by two European club-themed official music video versions, the first being released on November 10, 2008. Inna has promoted the song at various gigs across Europe and also performed it on the 2009 Eska Music Awards, Legendario Ice Experience, Loop Live and at the Sopot Hit Festival in Poland.

Background

"Hot" was written and produced by Romanian dance music trio Play & Win. Play & Win have also written and produced all the tracks from Inna's debut album Hot. Before their success with Inna, the trio had achieved solo success topping the Romanian Top 100 as well as with dance artist Akcent. Inna recorded the song in 2008 at Play & Win Studios in Constanta, Romania and the song was published through her Romanian record label, Roton.[1] The track's verses consists of the lyrics "You belong to me, I belong to you, fire from my heart burning just for you, when you're far away, I'm in love with you, feelings that are so high, what can I do?" and the chorus "Fly like you do it, like you're high like you do it, fly like you do it, like a woman."[2] Evoking that the song's title "Hot" is an adjective for one's relationship, to the extent that when your lover is far away, you are still in love with him/her. The track features male vocals in some of the ad-libs as well as in the intro lyric "Go!" Inna's ad-libs fall in after the first chorus.

"Hot" is composed in a tempo of 128 beats per minute[3] and has been stylised to the European electrohouse genre. The track acts as the opening track on Inna's debut album of the same name. The song has been composed in a structure of: verse - chorus - ad-libs - ad-libs - chorus - ad-libs - chorus - chorus. The build-up to the first verse is approximately forty-five seconds long and two of the three ad-lib sections are sung by the male vocals of Marcel Botezan of Play & Win.[4]

"Hot" appears on numerous compilation albums, of which include: 538 Dance Smash 2009 Vol.4, 538 Dance Smash - Hits Of The Year 2009, Damn! 26 - 100% Dance Hits, Disco Estrella Vol. 12, DJ Selection 262 - The Balkanian Explosion, Grandmix 2009, Hot! Summer Hits 2009, Jaarmix 2009, Love2Club, Máxima Fm Compilation Vol. 10, Radio 538 - Hitzone - Best Of 2009 and Todo Exitos 2009.[5]

Inna has performed "Hot" live at the 2009 Eska Music Awards[6], Legendario Ice Experience[7] and at the 2009 Sopot Hit Festival in Poland.[8] Inna also performed the song at Loop Live in Sofia, Bulgaria on October 11, 2009.[9]

For the single's release in the United Kingdom, the song premiered on the radio broadcast of Floorfillers on January 22, 2010 in association with Inna's UK record label All Around the World who also uploaded "Hot" to their music video channel.[10]

In January 2010, an ultra video mix was released by DJ Riddler, on American record label Ultra Records. The mix includes "Hot," as well as "All That Matters" by Mischa Daniels vs. De Nuit and "Feel It In My Bones" by Tiësto featuring Tegan And Sara.[11] "Hot" was named song of the year for 2009 by popular Russian radio station DFM.[12] The single was released in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2010, on downloads, the physical release was three weeks later.[13]

The song was remixed to two minutes and thirty three seconds by Liverpool house music group Cahill and features on the compilation album Love2Club.[14] And for its UK release the track was edited to just over two minutes and thirty seconds. "Hot" was playlisted before its single release on BBC Radio 1, Kiss FM and Galaxy FM in the United Kingdom.[10]

Another remix by ElectrowJungs was produced for the song and it features Cuban-American rapper Pitbull.[15]

Music video

The first version of the music video for "Hot" was made in 2008 in Romania. It was released for the first time, on YouTube on November 10, 2008 where it has since received over 40,000,000 views to-date.[16] The first video has been entitled as the True Love Video Edit, whilst the second version became the Dancing In The Dark Video Edit. The second is approximately ten seconds longer than the first.

In the first version of the music video for "Hot", Inna can be seen singing wearing two different looks. The first look comprises her having long hair, wearing traditional, more covered up Romanian clothing. This look can be viewed in the scene in the music video where she is singing on a rooftop. The second look comprises Inna wearing a strapless modern grey dress and having her hair tied up. Her jewellery in this look is more untraditional and modern as opposed to the first look. This look can be viewed in scenes from the video where she is singing leaning up against a white wall in a nightclub.

The music video begins with a young blonde woman doing her hair and make-up, getting ready in a nightclub's back dressing room where she works as a stage dancer. Her fellow co-workers and friends then are seen around her as she receives a card from a supposedly secret admirer. The next scene involves the girl doing her job stage dancing in a nightclub. The music video then moves into a scene at the girl's home where she can be seen in casual dress arguing with her lover in front of their young daughter who is busy drawing. After the mother leaves, the father comforts his daughter who seems to be upset about her parents arguing and then puts her to bed. The music video then shifts back to the nightclub scene where this time the girl is crowded around by her friends because of the roses and card she received from her secret admirer before going back to stage dance that night. Whilst the girl is stage dancing, her secret admirer is shadowed but visible in the crowd at the nightclub. The girl arrives the next morning home again where she fights again with her lover and then packs her bags and leaves the house. Toward the end of the video the girl manages to find her secret admirer who then takes his sunglasses off and he turns out to be the girl's lover who she has been fighting with. They then hug. The music video ends with Inna and Play & Win standing together up against the white wall in the nightclub before they walk away together.

A second music video for "Hot" was made in 2008 and leaked a few weeks after the first version did. It differs from the first in the sense that it has no storyline.

The video begins with a round red speaker backed in red lighting visible onscreen, then moving to a scene where a man with tied back long black hair dressed in a black dance outfit can be seen dancing backed by pink lighting. "INNA" then appears onscreen followed by "HOT" - where the round red speaker is used as a substitute for the letter 'O' in the word. In Inna's first scene she has straightened loose hair, a butterfly-like necklace wearing a beige short dress and dark-coloured bracelet, dancing to a yellow-lighted background.

The video then moves to a nightclub scene where a DJ is busy DJing, wearing a dark pair of sunglasses and a beanie headpiece. A club full of people can then be seen dancing to a light green background. Scenes then move to two different girls dancing separately. The one wearing a short white top and black pants dancing to an orange background. The other wearing a short black top and white pants dancing to a red background. In Inna's next scene, she is singing into a microphone built-in from the ceiling next to the round red speaker. She is wearing a very long, fluttered grey dress which is blown up and down during the scene by special wind effects. She also is wearing grey-coloured make-up and eyelash extensions - singing in a red background. Another girl can be seen dancing, with blonde hair and a grey hoodie. The scenes move back and forth, rapidly throughout the music video between Inna, the main dancers and the club.

In Inna's final scene she has her hair tied-back and is wearing a tight black vintage pants over a white sleeveless top dancing to a pink background. Three of the main dancers then come together for a routine dance and the video ends with Inna and Play & Win standing next to each other.

Live performance

Inna performed live "Hot" on severral concert dates, including the Sopot Festival, where she was nominated at "Best International Song". In that night she was the third. She has also performed the song in her Romanian and European 2009-2010 promo tour. A major performance of the song was also at the Starfloor 2010, where she performed "Hot" in a medley with "Amazing" and "Deja Vu".

Chart performance

On May 31, 2008, "Hot" debuted at number thirty-three on the Spanish Singles Chart. It later entered the chart's top ten on July 12 at number nine and went on to peak at number one on July 26 for one week. The single spent twelve consecutive weeks within the top ten and twenty-three consecutive weeks within the top forty, exiting the chart on November 8, 2009.[17] It was later certified Platinum by PROMUSICAE after surpassing 80,000 copies in sales.[18]

On August 30, 2009, "Hot" debuted at number thirty-seven on the Dutch Top 40. It later entered the chart's top ten on September 19 at number seven and went on to achieve a peak of number two on October 24. The single spent ten weeks within the chart's top ten and eighteen weeks within the top forty, exiting the chart on January 2, 2010.[19]

On September 19, 2009, "Hot" debuted on the Flanders Belgium Singles Chart at number fifty. It went on to enter and peak in the top ten at number six on November 7. It spent three consecutive weeks within the chart's top ten and nineteen within the chart's top fifty.[20]

On October 3, 2009, "Hot" debuted at number thirty-three on the Wallonia Belgium Singles Chart. It later entered the chart's top ten on November 7 at number eight and peaking at number six on November 21. It spent a total of three non-consecutive weeks within the chart's top ten and seventeen consecutive weeks within the top forty.[20]

"Hot" also debuted and has so far peaked at number eighty on the German Singles Chart for the second last week of 2009. It has so far spent six weeks within the chart.[19]

In Sweden, the song made its debut at number forty-three on January 29, 2010. It has so far reached a peak of twenty-nine and spent a total of two weeks on this chart.[21]

"Hot" has been a major success on various airplay charts as well, reaching the top ten in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Russia and Slovakia.

On 21 March 2010, "Hot" debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #8, while also managing to reach the #1 spot on the UK Dance Chart. On the March 28 UK Singles Chart, "Hot" climbed 2 places to a current peak of #6 [22]. On 1 April 2010, the single also debuted on the Irish Singles Chart at #48.

The song debuted and peaked at number 97 in Canadian Hot 100, on March 27, 2010 issue and then dropped off.

In the United States, it was a massive success, reaching #1 on the Hot Dance Airplay chart due to not many stations on that chart.
