For a January 2005 deletion debate over this page see Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Abraham Lincoln's Burial and Exhumation

I am creating this page to preserve space at the main Abraham Lincoln page, which has grown far too long. I think this action is appropriate, given that the exhumation section of the old page deals with Lincoln after his life ended, as opposed to Lincoln as an animate human being. As such, the events described actually involve people other than Lincoln, as opposed to Lincoln himself. Additionally, the section is very long and contentious. Putting it here will allow for fuller discussion of the issue.

NP

I've made a lot of edits - does anyone have an opinion about renaming the article as "Abraham Lincoln's Burial and Tomb"?165.189.169.190 (talk) 22:22, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cashman

So, did Cashman view Lincoln's body or not? First is says that he was "another youth present", then in the last paragraph says he never was (the word "admitted" makes it sould like a hoax was exposed). Is there a consensus about whether he was there or not? Also note that some of the Cashman sentences are copied word-for-word from this site (which says he was the last person to see Lincoln). --JW1805 (Talk) 04:09, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More details needed

This article (and/or the main Lincoln article) needs more details, such as dates, about the lying in state and funeral at the White House, the train trip to Illinois, and the three burials there (public receiving vault, temporary tomb, permanent tomb). See, e.g., http://www.state.il.us/HPA/hs/Tomb.htm Jedwards05

The Flag disintegrated in 30 years??

From the current version of the article: "On his chest, they could see red, white, and blue specks — remnants of the American flag with which he was buried, which had by then disintegrated."

I think this statement is spurious, unless they made flags out of bread in the 1800's. This suggests that cloth takes a mere 30 years to decay, sealed in a coffin, which is sealed in a sarcophagus that is then sealed in a tomb. So... citatation or deletion needed.

See note #2. Rklawton 21:56, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the coffin was opened and closed several times. Futhermore, the fabric the flag would have been made of during this era would not have been nearly as durable as modern day fabrics, and it is totally plausible that the flag could have deteriorated. 02:38, 22 January 2009 (UTC)~

Exhumation

According to Note #2, Lincoln's coffin was moved 17 times and opened 5 times. I have no reason to dispute this. This article describes only the last exhumation and viewing. If true, then this article is either poorly named or missing a LOT of information. Rklawton 21:56, 17 August 2007 (UTC) yay[reply]

Title Change

I think we should change the title of this page to Abraham Lincoln's Burials and Exhumations, since he was buried more than once. --Coingeek (talk) 01:04, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
