50 Cent, an American rapper, has released four studio albums, twenty-three singles, two video albums and one soundtrack. He is the sixth best-selling artist of the 2000s in the United States, with US album sales at over 14.8 million during the decade. His music has been released on the record labels Columbia Records and Interscope Records, along with subsidiaries Aftermath Entertainment, Full Clip Records, G-Unit Records, Shady Records and Shadyville Entertainment. He has earned twenty platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[a] In this discography, music videos and collaborations are included as well.

After he signed to Columbia Records in 1999, 50 Cent first began to receive attention from underground audiences after the release of the controversial single "How to Rob", which gained attention due to the numerous negative comments in the song towards various other hip-hop artists. The song was set to be included on his original debut album, Power of the Dollar, which was set to be released on 4 July, 2000:[1] however, the album's release was cancelled after 50 Cent was involved in an incident on May 24, 2000 which eventually hospitalized him, in which he was shot seven times: whilst he was in hospital, Columbia dropped him from the label and blacklisted him from the music industry as they believed his song "Ghetto Qu'ran" had brought about the shooting. After leaving hospital, he recorded several mixtapes with his group, G-Unit, with the assistance of business partner Sha Money XL, that helped to build his reputation: this culminated when he released the independent compilation album "Guess Who's Back" in 2002. The album peaked at number twenty-eight on the Billboard 200,[2] and after future label-mate Eminem heard a copy of the album, he requested him to sign to his own label, Shady Records.

50 Cent recorded a new debut studio album with the label, titled Get Rich or Die Tryin', which was released on 4 February, 2003. The album included the commercially successful singles "In da Club", later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, "21 Questions" and "P.I.M.P.", both of these being certified gold by the RIAA, and the slightly less successful single "If I Can't", the former three both peaking in the top three of the US Billboard Hot 100, and the former two at number one.[3] The same year, he was granted his own imprint label G-Unit Records, named after his group of the same name, to which he immediately signed the other members, including Young Buck, Lloyd Banks Tony Yayo, and later Game, then known as The Game.

In 2005, he released his second studio album, The Massacre, which sold 1.14 million copies in the first four days, breaking his previous record as the highest selling artist in an abbreviated sales cycle[4] It was eventually the second highest selling album of the year, behind only Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi, selling 4.83 million copies in the United States,[5][6] and also produced four top six singles in the United States: "Candy Shop", which eventually became 50 Cent's second number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Disco Inferno", "Just a Lil Bit", and "Outta Control (Remix)".[3] Later in 2005, he appeared in The Game's singles "How We Do" and "Hate It or Love It", which were both certified gold be the RIAA, and peaked at number four and two on the US Billboard Hot 100 respectively: however, Game would have left G-Unit Records, and the group itself, by the end of the year after a high-profile feud with 50 Cent. 50 Cent also starred in the semi-autobiographical movie Get Rich or Die Tryin', and the film's soundtrack peaked at number two on the Billboard 200.[2] It also yielded four singles, the international hits "Hustler's Ambition" and "Window Shopper", which peaked at sixty-five and thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively,[3] and the Billboard hits "Best Friend",which peaked at number thirty-five on the Billboard Hot 100,[3] and "I'll Whip Ya Head Boy".

In 2007, 50 Cent's studio third album, Curtis was announced to be released in the same week as Kanye West's album Graduation, prompting a much hyped sales competition between the two albums. Curtis was eventually beaten to the top spot by Graduation, selling 691,000 copies to Graduation's 957,000 in debuting at number two on the Billboard 200.[7] It produced five singles, including the international hit "Ayo Technology", which peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100[3] and was later certified gold by the RIAA, and the Billboard hits "Straight to the Bank", "Amusement Park", "I Get Money" and "I'll Still Kill".

In 2009, 50 Cent appeared in the single "Crack a Bottle", along with Eminem and Dr. Dre, which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, became 50 Cent's third number one in the United States, and was also a worldwide chart success, peaking in top twenty of several national charts worldwide. Later in the year, he released his fourth studio album, Before I Self Destruct, after releasing the mixtapes Sincerely Yours, Southside the previous year, and War Angel LP and Forever King earlier in 2009. The album was released to disappointing first week sales in comparison to his previous efforts, only selling 161,200 copies in debuting at number five on the Billboard 200. It was later certified gold in the United States with domestic shipment in excess of 500,000 copies,[8] and produced three singles, including the international hit "Baby By Me", which charted in the upper regions of various national charts worldwide, and peaked at number twenty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100.[3] It also produced the promotional single "OK, You're Right" and the second single "Do You Think About Me" which underperfomed commercially in peaking at number four on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. Currently, 50 Cent is working on his yet to be titled fifth studio album, which is set to be released in November 2011, and has so far yielded the promotional single "Outlaw", which peaked at number eighty-seven on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100.

Footnotes

  1. ^ The twenty certifications by the Recording Industry Association of America include sixteen platinum certifications credited as a solo artist[8] and four certifications with various artists.[8][38][67]
  2. ^ Although the US Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts both comprise up to a hundred songs, the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles and Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles act as 25-song extensions to each chart. Thus, songs that have peaked up to these extension charts are listed in this discography under the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with values over a hundred.[119]
