Sólrun Jákupsdóttir Løkke Rasmussen (born 22 November 1968) is the wife of the current Prime Minister of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen.[1][2]

Rasmussen is sometimes described as "Førstedame" (First Lady) by Danish media,[3][4][5][6] however, because the head of state Queen Margrethe II is the official first lady, Rasmussen is properly referred to as Statsministerfrue (Wife of the Prime Minister).[7]

Early life and family

Rasmussen was born Sólrun Jákupsdóttir on 22 November 1968 in Klaksvík, Faroe Islands. She is the daughter of chief physician Jákup Petersen and lecturer Bergljót av Skarði. Her mother's parents were the Tjóðveldi politician Sigurd Joensen and the writer Sigrið av Skarði, who was the daughter of the Faroese folk educationist and poet Símun av Skarði.

Rasmussen moved from the Faeroe Islands to Denmark to study medicine.[8] After her marriage to Lars Løkke Rasmussen and the birth of their children, Rasmussen ended her pre-medical training.[9] Rasmussen and her husband have 3 children.[8]

Career

From 1998 to 2005, Rasmussen was a city council member for Græsted-Gilleleje, representing the Venstre Party .[8] Beginning in 2001, Rasmussen studied education at Zahles Seminarian, earning a Teaching Certification in 2005.[8] Since 2005, Rasmussen has taught English, mathematics, physics and natural science at the Royal Danish Theatre's Laeseskolen in Copenhagen.[8][10] Her husband assumed the position of Prime Minister on April 5, 2009.[3][8]

In 2009, Rasmussen returned to politics and was elected to a council seat in Gribskov municipality for the Venstre Party.[11][12] In October 2009, she visited Liberia where she met with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as representative for the Danish Refugee Council.[13]

Order of precedence

In the Danish order of precedence, Rasmussen takes precedence while accompanying her husband, during his tenure as Prime Minister, in Class 1 Number 4, similar to other wives of cabinet members, after the Royal Family as well as the Counts of Rosenborg and the Countess of Frederiksborg. Class 1 Number 4 does not mean they are 4th in the order of precedence; there are several dozen royals and nobles who take precedence before the cabinet members and their spouses.[14] While not accompanying her husband during his formal duties, Rasmussen has no place in the order of precedence.
