Royal Military Police are known in the British forces as the "Redcaps" because they wear a peaked cap (or sometimes a beret) in red colour. The lowest rank of a military policeman is a Corporal (so they out-rank the common British soldier). They have a reputation of being "hard" men.

The uniformed military police perform all the duties of their civilian counterparts. The plain-clothes military police is the S.I.B. - the Special Investigations Branch.
