On 16 January 2012, the English Wikipedia community announced its intention to shut down the site for 24 hours, in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). The blackout, scheduled for 18 January 2012, coincides with similar action by other websites, such as Reddit.[1] Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales called for a "public uprising"[2] against the proposed legislation, which critics fear could threaten free speech. In response to concerns over PIPA and SOPA, the White House stated that it ""will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global internet."[3]
