The New Page Triage project is an initiative of the Wikimedia Foundation to improve the quality of new articles, the ease of patrolling them, and the treatment of their creators. Historically, new articles have been triaged by dedicated New Page Patrollers, using Special:NewPages and a variety of third-party gadgets such as Twinkle and Huggle. Deficiencies in the way new pages are currently created and managed, combined with problems with the existing software, led to understandable frustration which contributed to a proposal to turn off the ability of new editors to create pages. While we are not comfortable with such a restriction, the working environment of our contributors is something the Foundation takes very seriously. Accordingly, we are working on developing a new software suite to improve the patrolling experience, as well as the quality of submitted content.

New Page Triage is a piece of software the Foundation is developing to replace Special:NewPages. Coupled with a new Landing System for new editors trying to create pages, the hope is that this will improve the quality of new articles, the ease with which these articles can be patrolled, and the quality of the patrolling.

At the moment, the precise timetable and list of features for New Page Triage is still being worked out. However, broadly-speaking, the project is divided into two sections; the "list view" and the "article view". The list view is what we now recognise as Special:NewPages; a list of new articles, patrolled and unpatrolled, that editors can go through searching for articles that need further improvement. This is going to be completely overhauled, providing users with far more information about the articles in the queue and allowing for more specific filtering. The types of information we are looking to provide can be found on the talkpage; please do give us your feedback, and suggest other types of information you might find useful.

The article view is what people see after clicking on a link to a specific article. At the moment, this is just the standard editing interface. The New Page Triage project aims to replace this with an interface dedicated to patrolling, which will hopefully include twinkle- and huggle-like features such as tooltips, menus of commonly-used tags and keyboard shortcuts. This is coupled with alterations to the underlying site, including removing the 30-day limit. Both of these features are under discussion at the talkpage, and we welcome any and all comments and suggestions. More information on New Page Triage will be available shortly.

Community participation

The Wikimedia Foundation has a duty to include the community as much as possible during the feature development process and responding to their suggestions. Historically, this has not gone well; consultations have (as is explained in the document (link|describing the flaws in the current process) not resulted in much feedback, and led to a souring of relations between the Foundation and a segment of the community due to a feeling that editorial concerns are not being adequately considered. There have been attempts to improve the process during the past - for example, during the usability initiative the Foundation formed an "ambassador" program to reach out to editors - but, generally speaking, improvements have not been consistently applied. For New Page Triage, we would like to experiment with a more detailed and nuanced strategy to get the community involved. We are optimistic that this will work; there is a chance that, just like with the ambassador program, it may not. Either way, we hope to continually improve on how we engage editors.

Briefly, the engagement strategy calls for:

  • Better communication, including reaching out to editors individually, maintaining a regular newsletter and schedule of IRC chats and updates;
  • Discussion centralised on Wikipedia, rather than MediaWiki.org, making it easier for people to comment on the proposed features;
  • More information available to editors, including not only the usual screenshots and descriptions but a prototype deployed live in parallel to the existing patrolling interface.

This engagement is being run by the Community Liaison, Product Development, a dedicated Foundation contractor tasked with bridging the gap between the community and the Foundation. For more, see the full engagement strategy. If you have any other ideas for engagement, you can suggest them on his talkpage or via email to okeyes@wikimedia.org.
