In August of 2011, the Waterford Board of Education comprised of John Himmelspach, Joan Sutherland, Robin McGregor, Heather Halls, Bob Piggott, Rob Seeterlin and Rob Petrusha, unanimously voted to rename the alternative high school to Durant High School, after William Durant, the founder of General Motors.
