Hi

Hi everyone,

I'm a doctor with interests in anatomy/radiology and medical law/forensics/administration. I like to make small corrections every now and then. I also occasionally contribute articles on medical topics. I'm interested in Aussie showbusiness, particularly community access television, such as Channel 31 Australia. I often create stubs and initiate new parts of articles.

The contributions that I'm most proud of, though, are grammatical/spelling/usage upgrades. Although you may see this as pedantic and unhelpful, I think that it is important to use the language correctly. It gives so much credibility to wikipedia to have precise, concise expression.

TV presenters

Hi mate, noticed your work on Rob Brough. It seems there's no information on this site on prominent Australian TV presenters like Darrell Eastlake, Jamie Durie, etc etc. Perhaps we could set up a project on this? Also I suggest you check out WikiProject AFL. Welcome to the site. Rogerthat 04:07, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CN XIII?

Richard: Recently you added a section to the cranial nerves article regarding a proposed renumber of the CNs; this is totally cool and I've never heard this before! Do you have a citation to put into the article? I don't doubt you, it's just that I've recently been trying to ensure properly cited neuroscience-related artciles. Thanks a lot, and I hope you keep making such awesome contributions! Semiconscioustalk 08:17, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think of my changes to the Amiga article?

I think the changes were good, and it's structured a lot better now, thanks. I disagreed with a few minor changes, but I've made edits in those cases. Mdwh 00:59, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flicker fixing

AFAIK the only Amiga ever to have an inbuilt flicker fixer was the A3000. I've owned three Amigas myself - A500, A1200 and A4000 - and none of them have had a flicker fixer. JIP | Talk 21:33, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Escom/Amiga

The Escom released machines were more or less identical to the Commodore versions (OS3.1 instead of 3.0, a different floppy drive, and the A4000T also came in a new 060 version). Certainly not PowerPC based. See Amiga 1200 and Amiga 4000. Mdwh 03:17, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bea Arthur

If you check the edit summary and compare the changes, the category removed was Star Trek actors, not Star Wars. I don't dispute that she appeared in the holiday special, but she definitely has not appeared in any Star Trek production. The IMDb lists her as providing the voice of Suspiria in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Cold Fire," but after reviewing the episode and doing a search on the internet, it's reasonably certain that someone placed this info on the IMDb without knowing what they were talking about--the person sounds nothing like her. I have removed the category again... if you have any evidence to the contrary showing that she was the voice in the Voyager episode, please add the source and return the category. Thanks! -- SmokeDetector47( TALK ) 03:25, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support on my request for adminship. It did not succeed, however, with votes of 10/19/11, so I have not yet become an administrator. My RfA

My RfA recently closed and it was a success, passing at 84-02-00. I would like to thank you for taking the time to weigh in and on your subsequent support. Given that you have been quite active at RfA/RfB recently, your support means that much more. And I know it's quite cliche, but if you ever need any assistance by an admin, grab a Pepsi and don't hesitate to drop me a line on my talk page. Thanks again. My RfA
Thank you for supporting/opposing/commenting on my request of adminship, sadly the result was 54/20/7 an thus only 73% support votes, resulting in that the nomination failed. As many of you commenting that I have to few main-space edits, I'll try to better my self on that part. If you have any ideas on what kind of articles I could edit, pleas send me a line. :) AzaToth

RfA Results and Thanks

Richardcavell, thank you for supporting me in my recent RfA. Although it did not succeed as no consensus was declared (final: 65/29/7), I know that there is always an opportunity to request adminship again. If and when that day comes, I hope you will once again support me. If at any time I make any mistakes or if you would like to comment on my contributions to Wikipedia, you are more than welcome to do so. Regardless of your religious, cultural, and personal beliefs, I pray that whatever and whoever motivates you in life continues to guide you on the most righteous path.

While Slicky removed his nomination without closing it properly, he's still sort of new to Wikipedia and was hinting at a withdraw of a nomination a few hours ago. Look it's not like I doubt the accuracy of what you've written it's just that (as you no doubt saw) I added some citations, categories and additional data to the article and could not see anything about him being booted for being gay - and as such I had to remove it. If it was only not "banned" until recently then you should be able to find a source easily correct? In regards to your statement being in good faith, next time someone requests something of you respond "happy now" and see if they misconstrue it as sarcasm - I think you'll find it is usually used in a sarcastic fashion. Regardless I apologise for taking it the wrong way. Thanks in advance, - Glen T C 09:00, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Masssiveego's votes on Requests for Adminship

Quoting the original message. "Are you serious about all those oppose votes? You commented that someone had too few photo uploads. Is that really one of your criteria? - Richardcavell 04:06, 6 April 2006 (UTC)"

Yes, serious about those votes. Mostly from some pretty good standards. For the photo thing, it's like this, it's possible, an admin has gots to be one of those leonardo da vinci types, the well rounded person, a jack of all trades. One small part of wikipedia is working with photos, dealing with images and stuff like that. If some newbie chatted with one of those admin types with a photo question, and just was like lost. That would be like blind guy leading blind guy, just aweful. So when the newbie got left confused because the admin was like so uptight specialized in one field of wikipedia, it's like what the? This is wikipedia? I like my admin knowing at something about everything. --Masssiveego 23:05, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Idea for the bot

Hi, have a look at what your bot did to Peter Hore. I don't have a problem with the bot deleting the image, but why doesn't it delete the fairuse tag as well? Otherwise the tag is 'orphaned' (to coin a term). - Richardcavell 13:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image license tags shouldn't appear in articles. They should only be applied to image description pages. Since the tag shouldn't have been there in the first place, I see nothing wrong with OrphanBot not removing it. --Carnildo 03:47, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update tally please

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/NickCatal2 - as the closing bureaucrat, could you update the tally? - Richardcavell 07:27, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Richard, I am not a bureaucrat. The candidate indicated his withdrawal in a statement posted at 15:52, and I removed it from WP:RFA and closed it out properly after his withdrawal. For the record, the last vote came after his withdrawal. We should not be so concerned about the exact count, rather we should just use the RfA as feedback to the candidate and information for the rest of us when his next RfA comes. There is no need to adjust the count. Cheers, NoSeptember talk 11:41, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I noticed that you voted "oppose" on my RFA. I don't want to bury you with contrived reasons why you should support instead, so I won't. Hi, this is Matt Yeager. I wanted to thank you for your vote on my request for adminship. The count was something like was 14/20/5 when I decided to withdraw the request. My decision was based on the fact that there are enough things wasting people's time on the Internet that doomed RFA's shouldn't be kept up for voters to have to think about. Regardless of the rationale behind your vote, I hope you will read this note for an extended note and discussion on what will happen before I make another try at adminship (I didn't want to clog up your userpage with drivel that you might not be interested in reading). Ok, now I think about it both of the categories (plus the other two similar ones I was going to add) would have been enormous; would it be acceptable to have subcategories of them all? What I meant with this, well using your examples of Australian paedophiles, there could be a paedophile category, an australian category, and an australian paedophile category that was a sub category of both of those categories? Gillick

Hi.

Thanks for your comment on my talk page. I would happy to look over your essay, if you want provide your email on my talk page. I did my law thesis partially on medical consent in minors.

To the issue at hand: I don't think concurrent consents is a matter of the High Court 'changing its mind'. There simply is no explicit High Court authority on the issue. You noted that McHugh J said in Marion that Re R is 'inconsistent with Gillick', which presumably means he disagrees with it. However, the majority judgement gave no opinion on the matter, although they were certainly aware of Re R(they footnoted it). In any case, any opinion would have been obiter, as Marion did not reach the Gillick test.

On this last point, Marion can be quite a difficult case to understand becuase it was not a direct application of Gillick. Rather, Gillick was considered becuase it was relevant to arguments about the extent of parental power and the parens patriae jurisdiction. There is an argument that the reasoning of the majority in Marion regarding the issue of special medical procedures (Mason, Dawson et al) implicitly relied on Gillick terminating parental rights. Ummm... this argument is hard to present concisely but if you are interested I can further explain in email.

In any case, we lack explicit guidance as no subsequent cases in lower courts have raised concurrent consents because the parents have been in agreement with the minor's refusal. The issue is unlikely to be decided becuase of Australian court's willingness to use the parens patriae jurisdiction in medical matters, which renders irrelevant the need to rely on the parent.

For authority on the issue the doctor would need to have already proceeded in reliance on parental consent. Such cases usually run into procedural or evidential problems unless litigated by the minor (against their parents) straight away: how do you show what somebody's level of competence was x years ago? (an interesting recent case on this is Raabe v Brisbane Regional Health Authority [2005] QCA 041)

There are only about a few cases from Australian courts on Gillick and most are quite short. I would be happy to email you the citations if you leave an email address. You may already be familar: I am thinking Docs v Y, Re Jessica, Re Heather, Minister v AS, and the two Joseph's cases. However, none of these kids were actually found Gillick competent and all used the parens patriae jurisdiction. Mb99 08:41, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To me, oppose and support votes are pretty much the same; supports mean you're doing something right, while opposes mean things need improvement. I welcome both. However, to further your analogy to a real election; Wikipedia is a democracy. In a real election, you don't hear just one party's view, right? You base your vote upon the facts that have been laid out by multiple people. So far, the facts at my RFA have been a few which I have tried to explain. Again, feel free to change your vote to an even stronger oppose, but I still believe that explanations should be given where they are needed. _-M o P-_ 01:07, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
