Lucius is a psychological horror adventure stealth game developed by Shiver Games and published by Lace Mamba Global for Windows. It is centered on a six-year-old boy, who is the son of Satan. Players take control of Lucius as he murders members of his household, using powers of telekinesis and mind control to orchestrate deadly accidents that lead to the deaths of multiple residents of Dante Manor. Players use their wits and follow hints to ensure they do not leave any evidence that would lead to the protagonist's mission failing.

Plot

Lucius is a psychological horror adventure stealth game in which the player takes form of a six-year-old boy gifted with supernatural powers akin to the Antichrist, reminiscent of Damien Thorn from The Omen.

When Lucius was born on the date of June 6th, 1966, nobody expected him to be anything other than a normal little boy. His childhood, spent in the luxurious manor on the private estate of his father, a US Governor, was as normal as every kid’s young years, excluding the extreme wealth of his parents.

The night before Lucius turns six, the Devil appears in his dreams and identifies himself as Lucius's "real father". The Devil tasks his son with aiding the powers of evil in taking over the world. Lucius kicks off this global takeover by first murdering every member of his household, including staff, in order to obtain his father's vast fortune and make use of the political power associated with his name.

Characters

  • Lucius - A six-year-old with satanic powers who one day plans to take over the world for his father, Lucifer.
  • Lucifer - The Devil. He acts as a mentor to Lucius, providing him with supernatural powers to help murder the other inhabitants of Dante Manor and warning him of potential problems.
  • McGuffin – McGuffin is the detective investigating the deaths caused by Lucius. He gets more and more suspicious as the list of dead grows longer.
  • Mary – The oldest of the maids. She is a frail woman in her mid fifties and is weakened because of her many years maintaining the house. Lucius locks her into a freezer storage where she either freezes to death or dies from suffocation.
  • Ivor – The handyman of the family household. He is large and has developed a strong drinking habit. He is very often drunk. Lucius kills him when he attempts to repair a broken piano, using his telekinetic powers to crush Ivor under the piano's weight.
  • Charles – Lucius's birth father, a very wealthy US senator. As he is a very busy man, he rarely spends any time with Lucius. Through the story he becomes more aware of his son's behavior and starts to doubt his innocence. He is the last member of the household that Lucius kills by causing a broken pillar to fall over him.
  • Gene – A friend and colleague of Charles. Working with the US government and alongside Charles, he frequents Dante Manor. His smoking habit irritates Lucius. He dies when attempting to light his cigarette near the gas stove, which had been tampered with by Lucius.
  • Jed – The house butcher. His head is split in two when falling onto one of his own machines, which was activated by Lucius' telekinetic powers.
  • Agnes – The woman responsible for organizing the servant's schedules. She spends all her time in her office ordering maids around the house and demanding more food from them. Lucius puts rat poison in her food, killing her.
  • Jovita - A young maid who mainly works for Agnes. She has strong feelings for Lucius’ Uncle Tom. After realizing that Tom is cheating on her, her mind is weak enough for Lucius to control her by telepathy, making her commit suicide by jumping from the balcony.
  • Tom – As Charles’ brother, Tom lives a very comfortable life in the family manor. He has a reputation for being a leech and a womanizer. During a period of heavy drinking and depression, Tom is poisoned by Lucius.
  • Antonio – The Spanish gardener. Lucius takes over his mind and makes him put his head into the lawn mower, decapitating him.
  • Fabius – Lucius’ grandfather, a man who has earned the bulk of the family money through the Mafia. Despite having a pact with Lucius' father the Devil, Lucius stabs him in the back with a knife.
  • Susan – A middle aged maid who, like Jovita, has feelings for Tom. Lucius kills her in her bath by putting a hair dryer in her bathtub, killing her by electrification.
  • Michael – The servant who works as the Manor's driver. He plays in a jazz band. Lucius first makes him unconscious with chloroform, after which he locks Michael into the garage with the car running, causing him to die from inhaling a large quantity of exhaust gas.
  • Nancy – Lucius's birth mother. She doesn’t spend much time with Lucius, reasoning that there are so many maids taking care of him she does not have to worry about his upbringing. Lucius takes control of his father's mind and makes him kill his own wife with a nail gun in front of the police officers, giving Charles the blame for all murders.
  • Will – The house mechanic. While handcuffed to a shelf, Will has his body covered in oil and set on fire by Lucius.
  • James – Lucius’ private tutor. Lucius, with his telepathic powers, forces him to shoot himself in the head.
  • Alistair – The household butler. He slips on the icy doorstep, after which Lucius uses his telekinetic powers to make a sharp icicle fall down, piercing the butler's head.
  • Wayne – An outside reporter who comes to investigate Dante Manor after a few deaths have occurred. He tries to get information off whomever he can, but is not received warmly by the majority of the family. Lucius first intends to kill him through ritual sacrifice, but he breaks free and Lucius fights him off with fireballs, eventually burning him to death despite his attempts to kill Lucius.
  • Terrence - A police officer patrolling the manor during the deaths, when Charles kills his own wife (while under Lucius's control) he is ordered to stay to guard Lucius. He is decapitated by a mechanical fan brought down by Lucius's telekinesis.

Two Catholic priests are also killed by Lucius. They are burnt to death by Lucius' ability to launch fireballs. This leaves Lucius himself, Lucifer (the Devil), and Detective McGuffin the only characters in the game that survive beyond the ending. A total of 20 people are killed throughout the game.

Reception

Lucius got mixed to negative reviews. It received a score of 56.88% on GameRankings[1] and 55/100 on Metacritic.[2]

Gaming website GameSpot said "the biggest problem is a lack of information; tips are given [...] but the core aspects of the game are not explained well".[3] In a negative review, Adventure Gamers stated that "much of the writing and voice acting is mediocre at best".[4]
