Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up is the first box set by American recording artist Nicki Minaj, released on November 19, 2012, by Young Money, Cash Money, and Republic.[1] A reissue of her second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012), it is packaged with the original album, a disc with eight additional songs, and a DVD with behind-the-scenes footage and the album's music videos.[2] Stylistically, the original album is divided by a first half of hip hop tracks and a second half of dance-pop songs, while the additional songs incorporate hip hop and R&B styles. Contributions to the album's production came from a wide range of producers including Boi-1da, T-Minus, and Juicy J.
Upon its release, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up received generally positive reviews from music critics. Three official singles have been released thus far: "Va Va Voom", "The Boys", and Freedom". Minaj embarked on the Pink Friday: Reloaded Tour to promote the album.
Background
Minaj commented at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, "I'm putting lots of new songs on there and I'm actually going to drop my new single like next week. Barbz, you are gonna spaz. You are gonna love it. You are gonna go crazy!"[3] Production of the project was a main focus on Minaj's three-part E! special, Nicki Minaj: My Truth, which aired in November 2012.[4] Its artwork was revealed on October 11, 2012, featuring an image of Minaj from her music video for "I Am Your Leader".[5] On On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Minaj stated that "I feel like the music is such a better representation of me where I am now as an artist in my career. As long as people can hear the music, I'm good."[6]
Composition
In an interview with Tim Westwood on BBC Radio 1, she stated that she believed The Re-Up was the best material she had released, also adding that it features less pop, and more hip hop material.[7] Minaj stated that her album was a better representation of her saying "I feel like the music is such a better representation of me where I am now as an artist in my career. As long as people can hear the music, I'm good."[8] For the most of the Re-Up it leans more towards Nicki's mixtape persona.[9] "Freedom" is a downtempo alternative hip hop and ambient genre song also influenced by pop music. Vibe stated the song is as "sonic" and "breezy". Many critics compared the song to her previous works of "Right Thru Me", "Your Love" and "Save Me", which were off Pink Friday.[10] "Hell Yeah" mixes bouncy tribal beats and lasts for a duration of four minutes eleven seconds. "High School" featuring american rapper Lil Wayne, lyrically speaks about adultery.[9] "The Boys" is an dancehall, folk[11] and hip hop[12] song written by Minaj, Canadian pop singer/songwriter Lillianna Saldaña, produced by Jonas Jeberg, and co-produced by Jean Baptiste.[13] It features a mix of synth swoops, syncopated percussion and gurgling acoustic-guitar arpeggios by Jeberg and Baptiste.[13] It also has a throbbing beat, harsh basslines and hyperactive breaks.[14] Cassie's parts are backed up by a guitar line.[15] "Va Va Voom" is a electropop and electronic dance song with influences of dubstep.[16] Lyrically, the song talks about "seduction finds Minaj playing the temptress atop some delicious dub-lite pulsations."[17] They said the lyrical content "I know that he got a wife at home, but I need just one night alone [...]"[17]

Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 72, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on eight reviews.[18] David Jeffries of Allmusic felt that "the too-pop Roman Reloaded now feels more balanced once this eight-track EP worth of material tips the scales".[19] Gerrick Kennedy of the Los Angeles Times commented, "Sure, she flirts with dance pop and R&B balladry, but you can forgive her for wanting to satisfy different tastes. Here, it actually works."[23]
Commercial performance
Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded rose seventy-nine spots on the US Billboard 200, from number 107 to number 29 selling 36,000 copies.[26][27] It sold more than most of the re-releases, including Katy Perry's Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which sold 33,000 copies in its first week.[28] In New Zealand, the album charted within the Roman Reloaded release and debuted at twenty-one.[29]
Minaj commented of the album's limited availability, "It's hard to get the album because the stores basically said that the last few re-releases they had put out did not do well and they didn't want to take a chance. Target and Wal-Mart are not selling the album, and Target is actually my biggest retailer. Best Buy only took limited [stock] because they wanted to play it safe. It kinda sets you up to fail."[30]
However, a spokesperson from Walmart had stated that the reason why they did not enlist the album was not because it was a re-issue, but because they do not issue albums with "Parental Advisory" stickers, saying "Walmart does not carry music that has a 'Parental Advisory' label. We do carry some 'edited' versions of popular music titles [...]"[31] A spokesperson from Target stated "We carry Nicki Minaj's re-released album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded — The Re-Up at Target.com. Target will continue to evaluate guest demand to determine if the album will be carried in store at a future date."[31]
Promotion
Minaj embarked on the Pink Friday: Reloaded Tour, a revamped version of the previous Pink Friday Tour, to support Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and The Re-Up, visiting arenas through 2012 and 2013. On November 18, 2012, Minaj performed "Freedom" at the American Music Awards.[32]
