Sports in Tamil Nadu

Different Sports has been played by the people of tamilnadu. These include both traditional sports and Sports from other countries. Tamilnadu has some notable players in each sports.

Traditional Sports

Outdoor

  1. Jallikattu - Bull taming sport celebrated during Pongal festival. Other names are Manju virattu and Eruthalvuthal.
  2. Uriyadi - Need to smash a hanging pot with a long stick, with the eyes shut.[1]
  3. Rekla race - Bullock cart race. It is categorised based on the Height and strength of the bulls. Distance to be travelled is based on these conditions.[2]
  4. Ilavatta Kal - Hosted for young mens. They need to lift a huge spherical stone.[3]
  5. Gilli-danda - Played with two sticks. Using a large stick to hit a smaller stick.
  6. Nondi - Played by folding one leg and jumping with other leg within some squares.
  7. Pacha kuthirai - Jumping over a person who is bended position.
  8. Cockfight
  9. Malyutham - Similar to wrestling. Mentioned in ancient literature.

Sports

  1. Cricket - More people are interested in Cricket. Notable players from Tamilnadu are Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Laxmipathy Balaji, Murali Vijay, Ravichandran Ashwin and Dineshkarthik. In Chennai M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is present with a capacity of 50000.
  2. Hockey - Less people are interested in Hockey. Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu is planning to setup a hockey academy[5]
  3. Squash - Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal are the notable players.
  4. Boating - Tamilnadu government is planning to develop the boat racing in the state. For this 10 boating houses in the state are to be utilized.[6]
  5. Swimming - Kutraleeswaran is a notable swimmer.[7]
  6. Tennis - Chennai Open is a professional tennis tournament organised in Chennai every January. Notable players are Ramesh Krishnan, Ramanathan Krishnan, Vijay Amritraj, Mahesh Bhupathi and Nirupama Vaidyanathan.
  7. Motor racing - The sport was pioneered by Sundaram Karivardhan (1954–95) in its early days. Motor racing between 1960s and 1980s were conducted at Sholavaram, a track used as a word war II air strip. [8] Modern motor racing events are held at the Irungattukottai Race Track owned and operated by Madras Motor Sports Club near Sriperumbudur and Kari Motor Speedway near Coimbatore. The people representing India in Formula 1 are from Tamil Nadu, namely Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok.
