The Documentary Channel is an American digital cable and satellite television channel that features documentary programming. It airs independent documentary films from around the world, including those never-before-seen in the United States. The channel (along with Halogen TV) will be replaced by Pivot, an upcoming channel aimed at young adults between 18- and 34-years-old, that will be owned by Participant Media, and will debut on August 1, 2013.[1]

Background

Documentary Channel launched in January 2006, and was independently owned and operated until it was purchased by Participant Media. The channel was founded by Oscar nominated and Emmy winning documentarian Tom Neff.[2]

Documentary Channel won its first Emmy Award, for Outstanding Documentary, in September 2007, for Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire.[3] Documentary Channel's signature series, DocTalk, enters its third season July 1, 2011. DocTalk is a weekly half hour program featuring filmmakers and their newest documentary film projects and releases.

Carriage

Documentary Channel is currently available via Dish Network and DirecTV, the latter of which added the channel on March 31, 2010. The press release claims the DirecTV launch doubles DOC's distribution base to 25 million.[4]
