Department of Agriculture and Water Resources

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is an Australian government department. Its role is to increase the profitability, competitiveness and sustainability of Australian agriculture, fisheries, forestry and food industries and enhance the natural resource base to achieve greater national wealth and stronger rural and regional communities. Policies and programs of the department include:

  • encourage and support the sustainable use and management of Australia’s natural resources
  • protect the health and safety of our plant and animal industries
  • enable industries to adapt to the fast-changing international and economic environment
  • help improved market access and performance for Australia’s agricultural and food sector
  • encourage and assist industry to adopt new technology and practice, and
  • assist primary producers and the food industry to develop business and marketing skills, and to be financially self-reliant.
