History

Founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1970 by Swiss editor Peter Lang, who came from a family of renowned Swiss booksellers and publishers, the press started as an academic publisher specialising in PhD theses and similar academic volumes. Established in 1982, Peter Lang Publishing USA is the North American division of the Peter Lang Publishing Group. Headquartered in downtown Manhattan, the publishing office specializes in the publication of advanced textbooks in education, media and communication, and Black studies for classroom use, as well as monographs in the humanities and social sciences.[3][4][5]. Peter Lang’s UK office was set up in Canterbury in 1996. Ten years later the business was incorporated at the Oxfordshire location it had expanded into in 1999. In 2012, the UK operation moved into its present offices in central Oxford, at the heart of the academic and publishing community. The UK office also has a commissioning presence in Ireland, working out of Dublin. The Oxford office publishes the full range of academic titles and has particular strengths in modern languages, Theology, Education, and new emerging disciplines in Film Studies and Queer Studies.[6] The publishing office in Brussels, PIE-Peter Lang, evolved from the takeover by the Peter Lang Publishing Group of Presses Interuniversitaires Européennes (PIE), a Belgian publishing house founded in 1985. The Brussels office specializes in publications in History, European Studies, Politics and International Relations.[7]

Today, the headquarters of the Peter Lang Publishing Group are located in Pieterlen and Bern, Switzerland with publishing offices located in Bern, Brussels, Frankfurt am Main, New York, Oxford, Vienna and Warsaw.[1]
