Blood and Oil[1] is an upcoming American prime time television soap opera, created by Josh Pate and Rodes Fishburne, set to air on ABC as a part of the 2015–16 television season on Sundays at 9pm as of fall.[2] The series follows a young couple who move to Williston, North Dakota after the biggest oil discovery in American history.

The series features an ensemble cast headed by Don Johnson as a powerful alpha male oil tycoon Hap Briggs. Oil also stars Amber Valletta as his catty socialite wife, Darla; Scott Michael Foster as his villainous son Wick; and Caitlin Carver as his daughter Lacey who has an affair with Hap's personal driver, AJ Menendez (Yani Gellman) who leads a triple life. Chace Crawford and Rebecca Rittenhouse also star as the series' poor protagonists, Billy and Cody LeFever, while India de Beaufort plays loan shark of the town Jules Jackman, and Delroy Lindo plays a sly sheriff, Tip Harrison.

Production

Development

The project was written in the mid-2000s by Josh Pate and Rodes Fishburne with Tony Krantz as executive producer. In September, 2011, ABC bought the script along with several other projects by Krantz.[3] However, ABC did not order a pilot for the 2012-13 television season. In October 2014, Boom moved to USA Network and began development via ABC Signature,[4] but was never filmed. On January 30, 2015, it was announced that the project returned to ABC and was picked up.[5]

The pilot episode was filmed in northern Utah and was directed by Jonas Pate.[6] On May 7, 2015, ABC picked up the pilot to series.[7] On June 1, 2015, it was reported that Cynthia Cidre, co creator and executive producer of TNT's well received, but short lived 2012 continuation of the iconic 1980s prime time CBS drama, Dallas had been tapped as executive producer and co-showrunner of Blood and Oil.[8]

Casting

Casting advertising began in February 2015. On February 20, 2015, it was announced that Scott Michael Foster landed the role of rich kid Wick.[9] On February 27, Rebecca Rittenhouse and India de Beaufort were cast in the main female roles.[10] On March 9, it was announced that Don Johnson had landed the leading role as the family patriarch and most powerful man in the town. Johnson is also the series' executive producer.[11] Also on that day, it was announced that Delroy Lindo will co-star as the Sheriff in the town.[12] On March 11, Chace Crawford joined the series as a main protagonist,[13][14] while Yani Gellman and Caitlin Carver also were cast as regulars.[15] On March 12, Amber Valletta landed the final series regular role of Hap’s glamorous new wife.[16]

After the pilot was picked-up to series, ABC started making casting changes. On May 26, 2015, it was announced that Caitlin Carver and Yani Gellman, who played Lacey Briggs and A.J. Menendez, left the show and the roles will be recast.[17]
