SaGa Frontier 2 is a PlayStation game released by Square Co., Ltd. in 2000. It was one of Square's last RPGs for the PlayStation, along with Vagrant Story.

The game is notable for shunning the use of 3D graphics and instead, using traditional 2D hand-painted watercolor sprites to give the game an almost storybook look.

Also, it was the first time since Romancing SaGa that Kenji Ito did not compose the music; it was instead scored by Masashi Hamauzu. Hamauzu would also go on to compose the music for the next game in the series, Unlimited SaGa.

Storyline

SaGa Frontier 2 has two separate storylines: The history of Gustave XIII of Finney (AKA Gustave the Steel) and the Knights family, which spans across three generations.

SaGa Frontier II takes place in the land of Sandail, roughly in the years 1200-1300. Template:Spoiler

Characters (Gustave's Quest)

Gustave Eugene, AKA Gustave XIII, AKA Gustave the Steel

Birth: 1220, Thermes Palace, Thermes, Finney Kingdom, Merchmin Death: 1269, A fort in Gustave's southern territory, Grand Teille. Presumably killed by Monsters. Age at Death: 49

For the majority of Gustave's storyline, you will be playing, of course, as Gustave himself. Gustave himself dies in 1269, but his storyline does not end there, and proceeds to shift onto other characters, but the majority of this aftermath is on Kelvin of Jade.

1220-1227 - Prince of Merchmin, Successor to the Throne of King Gustave XII

Gustave XIII, former prince of Thermes and successor to the throne of Gustave XII, is exiled by his father when at the age of 7 he fails the Firebrand Ceremony by being unable to manifest his Anima through the sword to light it aflame. Both he and his mother, Queen Sophie (who tried to prevent Gustave's banishment) are banished from the castle and forced to live in the slums of Thermes, being forbidden by Gustave XII to leave for Nohl. Master Cielmer, noting to Gustave XII that with Gustave XIII's banishment that his services are no longer required, asks for permission to leave Thermes and the King's Employ, which is granted. Cielmer then uses this opportunity to sneak them to Gruegel to seek asylum from King Sui of the HERE NAH , noting that Gustave XII has thoughts of execution possibly on his mind. Gustave will set neither foot nor sights on Thermes, Finney, or Merchmin for another 20 years.

1227-1232 - Exile in The Kingdom of Na

In Gruegel, Gustave grows up as an adolescent, violent, full of resentment and feels he is a "worthless piece of trash" as he puts it - an outcast, and ungifted, as he cannot manifest Anima. This warps Gustave's mind. During this time, the only person he remotely trusts is another young boy, named Flynn, who like Gustave cannot manifest Anima.

It is during this time that Gustave meets some of the people who will change his life and will affect history along with him, such as Leslie of Bering.

1233-1235 - Residency in The Kingdom of Jade and Apprenticeship

Age 13 turns to be a critical year in Gustave's life. King Sui of Na grants him and Sophie land of their own, near the Kingdom of Jade, which Sophie quickly follows up on, for political reasons (Of Gustave being seen as a vassal of King Sui) and also because she is being approached, possibly sexually, by King Sui.

It is during this year that Gustave takes a liking to the local Blacksmith, noting that they don't exist in Thermes, and few do in Gruegel. Over the next two years, as an apprentice, Gustave truly bonds with a person - the Blacksmith - for the first time. He completes the Sword in his fifteenth year, but notes it's a "Practice" sword - his "real" one being thrice as large.

1235 - Beginnings of Adventure

Gustave first begins exploring the nearby Caves of Jade at the age of 15, presumably shortly after finishing his sword. He picks bad timing, however: Sir Kelvin of Jade is here to alert the people that bandits have also taken up residency. One of them saw Gustave and Flynn heading for the caves, so he chases after them. Kelvin is noticeably not happy about having to do it, despite being the same age as Gustave.

Kelvin catches up to Gustave in the caves and from then on the two fight as a team fairly often. This is the beginning of their relationship, one that will only end upon the Death of Gustave, though Kelvin will manage the aftermath of it for several decades more.

1236 - Reappearence of Leslie

Gustave finds Leslie at a party that Thomas, the Count of Jade, is throwing and learns she is studying etiquette at his court. This will also begin a relationship of sorts between them. It never gets to love, but Leslie will remain an important figure in Gustave's decisions by weighing in her opinions and factors. Flynn notes, when Kelvin asks if Gustave likes Leslie, that "They were always fighting, but..."

1239 - Death of Sophie

Sophie has been bedridden, and when it is apparent that she is near death, Kelvin runs to find Gustave, after Flynn tells him that he took off with his sword and probably headed to the caves. Kelvin has Flynn talk to Sir Thomas and Master Cielmer, then runs off to the caves and finds Gustave. Gustave says he's been nothing but a burden and trouble to Sophie, but Kelvin convinces him that he needs to see her before she dies, and he agrees. Sophie gives him some last advice, then dies. This marks the complete maturing of Gustave, and the beginning of him as a historical figure.

Back in Thermes, Gustave XII is informed of Sophie's death, and he summons Gustave's Brother, Philippe, who immediately accedes to Marquis of Nohl. Phillippe shows remorse, and then bitter hatred at Gustave, telling the family portrait that "You're the one that killed mother!" Gustave's face is torn out of the painting.

1240 - Conquest of Wide

Gustave takes up residency in Wide - or at least, temporary residency at the local inn, along with Flynn and Leslie. He tells tall tales to the young Marquis of Wide, who humors him to his face, but like many others, calls him a "unworthy son" behind his back, who is more suited to be his Jester then one of his staff, as the Marquis' general, Nebelstern, fears.

Gustave is plotting, with Leslie and Flynn, to sack the city of Wide somehow, unfortunately, their attempts to dig up any dirt on Nebelstern fail, as there's "not a whisper of scandal attached to his name," as Leslie puts it. Gustave then has him dig up dirt on Sir Mouton, which reveals Mouton's good-hearted nature, in exempting the sick from taxation, assisting families barely making enough to make ends meet with surplus tax money from the wealthier classes, and even saving up money in case of emergencies. Gustave then reveals his plans to frame Sir Mouton with this information. Flynn is disgusted with Gustave's seemingly cold-hearted resolve, but Gustave sharply notes that if the Marquis fully trusts his staff, this ruse wouldn't work. Luckily for Gustave, it does work, who promptly summons Mouton, reprimands him, and places him on indefinite suspension for not notifying him of his actions. (Though it's of note that the Marquis DOES agree with Mouton's actions.) Nebelstern then resigns in protest.

That night, while Nebelstern is gone, Gustave seeks and finds a secret escape passage, used in case Wide comes under attack. After going through to find the exit, he utilizes this as an entrance for Kelvin and his armies of Jade to sneak in and quickly sack the city. By the time Nebelstern realizes Gustave's intentions and rushes to warn the Marquis, it is already too late - he's been had and Gustave's flag flies over the City of Wide.

1245 - Death of Gustave XII

An informant rushes into the city to inform the Mansion that King Gustave XII, Gustave's father, has died. Kelvin asks Gustave what he is going to do, but Gustave says he was exiled and has no business there, despite Kelvin's objections of him being the eldest son and thus able to claim the throne. Gustave quickly shoots this down, saying there probably is another heir already, in addition to his brother Philippe and sister Marie.

Soldiers of Wide are concerned when there's no order to mobilize, and they hear that Kelvin is opposed to it. Confronting him, Kelvin says it's Gustave himself that is hesitant, and noting that they've been training for this day. After consulting Leslie and the soldiers, Gustave is convinced that he should claim his right, but notes he has no experience as a general. Mouton (who has assisted Gustave since his conquer of Wide and has since forgiven him) suggests Nebelstern, who is still rather sour about the affair, Gustave having called on him several times and having been rejected each time, even with personal visits and a recommendation from Sir Thomas of Jade. Mouton offers to do it, and Gustave agrees.

Nebelstern is pleased to see Mouton, but quickly tells him to get any ideas about coming back out of his head. But then Mouton plays his ace: Cielmer. After a discussion and Cielmer's opinions on Gustave, Nebelstern agrees - not because he likes Gustave, but because like Cielmer, he wishes to see where Gustave's destiny lies.

1247 - Landing, Battle of Buckethill

Upon the death of Gustave XII, his son, Gustave's half-brother Gustave XIV, becomes the king of Finney. Gustave makes a claim as heir, and Gustave and his armies, plus Kelvin and his Armies from Jade, land on the western shores of the Lordless Land, which is south of Merchmin. Gustave feels nothing at returning home, and Gustave becomes remorseful, noting that his mother would not have wished this fight, nor the bloodshed for Finney Kingdom. Kelvin sharply tells Gustave not to utter such words in front of the men.

Nebelstern tells Gustave that the landing is proceeding as planned, and that he is sending messengers out saying "The rightful heir has returned." Gustave, again, calls himself a "good-for-nothing", for which Nebelstern also reprimands him much like Kelvin did moments earlier, but Nebelstern also shows a bit of his tact as a General by noting if this is viewed as an internal conflict, as opposed to an invasion, the people will simply yield to the victor. Gustave says he'll leave it up to him, and then leaves. Kelvin and Nebelstern confer, which leads to Nebelstern giving Kelvin a look into Gustave's psyche and train of thought, which was obtained from Cielmer. Nebelstern notes that their job is to contain Gustave's dark side.

Leading up to the Battle of Buckethill, Gustave crosses the Anath River and proceeds towards Merchmin. Gustave XIV gathers his army, plus armies from his vassal lords of Nohl and Otto, and proceeds south to fight Gustave, who blockade Zahl Peak. At this point, Gustave XIV's army splits and forms a force under the control of Lord Cantal of Otto, who moves to attack from behind. Gustave notices this, draws back, and camouflages itself on Zahl Peak. They then get reinforcements from Kelvin of Jade, and quickly attack Cantal's force. Cantal avoids combat and withdraws, watching the remainder of the battle as a spectator. Gustave XIV then takes this opportunity to attack Zahl Peak, and Gustave moves to intercept, meeting Gustave XIV's army at the Battle of Buckethill.

Gustave successfully defeats Gustave XIV's armies in a stunning defeat, and victorious, he meets his half-brother, who is tied up and held hostage in the Ruins of Hahn. After a few words from Gustave (and none from Gustave XIV), he leaves. Gustave XIV's last words to Gustave are ones he's heard all his life - "You good-for-nothing!" His throat is then slit by Nebelstern, and Gustave marches into Thermes triumphantly.

1248 - Gustave XIII, King of Finney

Gustave and his band quickly begin ruling Finney justly. However, there is some problems: Cantal, Marquis of Otto, has not paid his taxes for this year, which Gustave notes was probably Cantal expecting a change in the state of affairs, and compliments his shrewdness in doing so. Gustave is then informed that the Marquise of Otto, his sister Marie, has arrived. It is the first time Marie has ever seen her older brother, as she was born shortly before Gustave and Sophie were exiled. She brings news that Cantal wishes to swear his allegiance to Gustave, which Gustave grants, noting to her to tell him to rule Otto as he always has. Marie then leaves to give Cantal the news. Kelvin, after noting how much Marie resembled Sophie, notes that the last vassal state remaining to pledge allegiance is Nohl... ruled by Gustave's brother, Philippe. Gustave says he won't come, but Nebelstern notes that it would be Otto and Finney against Nohl if it came down to that; thus, Philippe is forced to come.

Gustave then enters Philippe's room, where he'd lived for some time after becoming Marquis. Leslie sees the painting with Gustave torn out of it and remarks how terrible it is. Gustave then gives his thoughts on him and why he hates him so. Gustave once again shows his self-hatred, which Leslie curbs before crying, but notes that without all that happened, she wouldn't be there today, or possibly even alive.

Some days later, Marie is back at Gustave's court. Gustave wishes to be left alone, but Kelvin refuses, saying security is lax and it's only him and Nebelstern to protect him. Philippe then arrives. He pulls out a dagger and states his intention to kill Gustave. Kelvin moves for action, but Gustave tells him to stand down. Gustave then notes that Philippe doesn't even need to get close to him, for he can cast spells, unlike him. Marie pleads to Philippe to stop, but Philippe states that he's been waiting 20 years for this. Philippe then feels his mother's anima inside Gustave, washing a wave of Nostalgia over him, when Gustave then relays one of Sophie's wishes: To apologize to Marie and Philippe. Sophie's anima manifests itself briefly during this moment, causing both Marie and Philippe to break down and burst into tears. Kelvin and Nebelstern then leave the room.

Outside at the castle gates, Philippe has sworn his allegiance, but solely for the sake of Nohl. Gustave agrees, saying he does not intend to rule this country, as he has no rights to the Firebrand. Philippe then opens up a bit and tells of how stern Gustave XII became after Gustave and Sophie's exile, due to the birth of Gustave XIV. Philippe then states that the blood within him is the "rightful blood" of the heir. He then leaves, and Marie also excuses herself. Flynn then shows up, and after being sad that Marie is gone, notes that Gustave looks unusually pleased. Gustave remarks that his heart feels refreshed, and he hasn't felt that way in years. Flynn wishes it to remain that way, always.

1249 - Construction of Hahn Nova

During this time, Gustave begins the construction of Hahn Nova in the Eastern Lordless Land, intending it to be his new base of operations. The Palace and Commons are complete, but it is up to the player to decide the layout of the remainder of the three sections to be built, by choosing each section to either be a shopping district, a smithy district, and an entertainment district. The game will then use the player's layout for Hahn Nova.

Of note, Gustave will not allow more than one Smithy or Shopping district, but he will allow you to make all three districts as Entertainment districts. In fact, if you do this, he will remark that the planner's reasoning (i.e; yours) is "brilliant" and appoints the planner in charge as overseer of the Entertainment districts as mayor.

1250 - The Firebrand Tragedy

Gustave has since moved his headquarters to Hahn Nova, leaving Philippe in charge of Thermes. Philippe is king, but since he has not undergone the Firebrand Ceremony, he is not the true king, either. (which is still Gustave.)

Philippe's intentions to perform the ceremony is made clear, with an old man in a pub predicting that his Anima will be out of his control - the stronger the Anima, the harder it is to control its manifestation into the sword, and that is why it is done when the heirs are young. At this time, Philippe is 28, Gustave is 30.

The old man's prediction proves eerily prophetic; Philippe attempts to control the sword, and succeeds for a short while, only to set it entirely ablaze, and burn himself, wounding him rather critically. Since he failed to control it, Gustave remains king of Thermes and Finney.

Some time (Days? Weeks? Months?) later, Gustave then confers with Philippe, with Marie in tow. Philippe makes his resentment clear, stating that Gustave has come from Hahn Nova to ridicule him, with Marie worried about his wounds, and Philippe replying to Gustave's remark of it being a "reckless challenge" by calling Gustave a good-for-nothing. Philippe then notes that all the people want is a REAL king, a true one, who has successfully undergone the Firebrand ceremony, something a "Rambler" like Gustave won't understand.

Gustave then asks Marie if Philippe has a son, and she confirms that he does, the "very adorable Philippe II" who has just turned two years old. Gustave tells Philippe to wait five more years, when Philippe II will be old enough to attempt the Firebrand ceremony.

1255 - The Firebrand Tragedy, Part II

Philippe II is now old enough to attempt the Firebrand Ceremony. Along with Philippe, he goes up to the sword and successfully controls his Anima through the sword, making Philippe II the true king of Finney. This pleases Philippe, who acknowledges Philippe II's request for assistance, and remarks that he and Uncle Gustave will help him. Suddenly, an Assassin rushes up and stabs Philippe II, who is then pushed out of the way by Gustave, who demands to know who gave these orders. The assassin states "What are you saying, Master Gustave? It was under your orders." Gustave vehemently denies this, demanding the truth. Philippe quickly grabs the Firebrand, and despite Gustave's protest that his Anima will be consumed, channels it into the sword. Philippe lights ablaze and kills the Assassin, then transforms into a red Dragon, carrying the fallen body of Philippe II away. Gustave, still reeling from the events, futilely demands explanations.

1269 - The Death of Gustave the Steel

Gustave is conferring with Flynn, Ventarbre, and a soldier. Gustave is wondering where Dirk, Flynn's son, is, noting that there's been no word of them since when they said they'd run into a pack of monsters, and that no scouts have found them. Gustave wants them to wait until daybreak. He then takes a slight jab at Flynn, noting "Dirk is quite accomplished, unlike his father."

However, dawn never comes. The fort gets attacked by a swarm of monsters and is set ablaze. Gustave tells Flynn to take Ventarbre and get out of there. Both say they do not wish to leave, but Gustave insists, noting that they'd be dishonoring Cielmer's memory if he let them die, and also stating that whoever is attacking wants Gustave, not them. Both once again voice their disapproval, stating that no matter what they want to stay by Gustave's side. Gustave then orders them to go. Flynn once again begins to plead, but Johan comes out and will defend Gustave. Ventarbre tells Johan he can't do it in his weakened state, but Johan says he can fight better than either of them can, even if weakened. Gustave then urges them to leave, and Flynn reluctantly agrees. Ven protests again, but upon Flynn's assistance, leaves as well. Gustave then leaves the defense up to Johan, who states that he doesn't have much time left, and tells Gustave to simply order him to defend. Gustave obliges, saying "We'll meet again." He then leaves and goes inside the fort.

Johan then fights an endless swarm of monsters. The monsters are actually relatively weak, but if a monster doesn't kill him, with each win, the Scorpion Poison will affect Johan and remove 1 LP. Johan, having 7 LP, can take this Seven times, but after the seventh, the Scorpion Poison will kill him. Thus, this is a fight you are forced to lose.

Dawn arrives, and Ventarbre and Flynn have successfully escaped. Dirk and his escorts show up, asking about Gustave. Flynn asks where Dirk has been, to which Dirk replies that after defeating the monsters, a villager told them his village was under attack, and the villager led them on a wild goose chase, getting them lost - and proving a conspiracy to kill Gustave existed. Flynn tells Dirk to take care of Ventarbre, noting that he's completed his duty in getting Ven to safety, and he rushes back towards the fort. Dirk pleads with his father not to go, but to no avail. Flynn, Dirk, and Ventarbre then return to the fort, however, it's too late - the fort is in ruins, and Gustave's sword sticks out of the ground. As they gaze upon it, a trail of light eminates from it... Gustave's Anima leaving his body.

This concludes Gustave XIII's story.

Kelvin of Jade

Birth: 1221, Presumably at the House of Jade, in the Kingdom of Jade. Death: 1292, Presumably Hahn Nova. Natural Causes. Age at Death: 71

Upon the death of Gustave in 1269, Kelvin takes over as the main character of Gustave's story. For events involving Kelvin Pre-1269, see Gustave's Story.

Upon Gustave's death, The whole of the Eastern Continent is thrown into a state of warfare, with several power struggles between lords vying for power. This is the second major half of Gustave's tale, called the "Heir War", though it's shorter than the first half, and parts of it are also broken into the Knights' storyline.

1269 - Gustave's Successor

Dirk goes to Hahn Nova and tells Kelvin of Gustave's death. Lords begin to amass armies and bring them to Hahn Nova. However, some do not come... most notably, Marquis Cantal of Otto. Kelvin's council calls this turn of events treasonous, but Kelvin calms them by noting that he must now look after Thermes, and cannot just leave on a whim. The council reaffirms their wish to move against Cantal, but Kelvin wants a messenger sent there to confirm his intentions. Cantal perceives this as a threat and moves towards mutual war, having 1000 troops immediately mobilize, and sending an order to have the entire force mobilized, advancing to Berth and occupying it.

The Council learns of this and two of them leave. Kelvin wants the remaining seven to mobilize accordingly, with Kelvin thinking that Cantal making the first move would be a fatal mistake. In Thermes, Cantal has messengers head towards two smaller vassals, Opus and Sleibul, to offer to join forces to take down Toule, and to give condolences for the late Gustave. The war preparations have continued to increase, now numbering 5,000 troops, and Cantal calls for a direct attack on Carnack, to be taken by brute force. Cantal hopes this move will have the other lords come to him and beg for allegiance.

20 days later, Hahn Nova's armies, under the control of Kelvin, have not made a move against Cantal. More than half of Merchmin's vassals have joined under Cantal's flag, and those who aren't begin to see the inaction as weakness and begin to distance themselves.

1271 - Destruction of Hahn Nova

Hahn Nova is now lordless after the death of Gustave the Steel. Cantal's army continues to advance, and the lords begin evacuating Hahn Nova, leaving Kelvin and his army as the last forces in Hahn Nova. A Soldier notes to Kelvin that staying behind is futile, but Kelvin wishes to defend Hahn Nova. The soldier convinces Kelvin to return to Jade and regroup. Kelvin agrees.

Overlooking Hahn Nova, Cantal gets word that Kelvin has withdrawn. Cantal comments on the wiseness of the decision, and Cantal says to let the soldiers rest and attack the city tomorrow at dawn. During the night, fires and riots break out as burglars and monsters seize the lawless city. Cantal gets word of this, but states to let them have it, saying he didn't intend to take the city anyway and that it would simply become a target if he had. Thus, Cantal's decision assures the destruction of Hahn Nova, remarking "That city is Gustave's. It's only appropriate that it return to the Earth, as he has."

En route to Jade, Kelvin asks if Cantal had set the fire, with a soldier noting Cantal's army hasn't moved, and that it was Monsters and Ruffians. Kelvin laments at how Hahn Nova is being destroyed by Monsters. Philippe III (named after Gustave's Brother and the assassinated Philippe II) notes that his soldiers are in no shape to put up a fight, and Kelvin agrees that their hearts are already in Jade. Philippe offers to go in Kelvin's stead, and Kelvin agrees, but tells Philippe not to enter Hahn Nova.

At the gates of Hahn Nova, Philippe disobeys his father, saying he cannot abandon Hahn Nova's citizens. The soldiers note they'll be caught in the fire if they stay, but by that time, monsters have already closed in. Philippe says if he dies in this city, he has no regrets, and will swear by his sword Firebrand that he will not run. Just before they're attacked, a Dragon comes and kills all the monsters. This dragon is, of course, Philippe I. Philippe takes the opportunity to run.

1288 - The Death of Cantal, Marquis of Otto

Cantal controls the Merchmin region after Gustave's death, but he dies relatively young at the age of 59. His kingdom is divided among his offspring and quickly loses its power. Kelvin advances into the Lordless Land and, at Hahn Nova, forms a pact with other vassals in Merchmin to establish supremacy there. He finally gets his glory at the age of 67.

Meanwhile, in Laubholz on the Southern Continent, Duke Edmund is about to have an audience with the daughter of Cantal, Nicolette. An advisor urges Edmund not to have the audience, lest the Count of Jade, Kelvin, find out. Edmund, however, says Kelvin cannot get to them, and also has ulterior motives - Nicolette holds land, and is single, as is Edmund. Another advisor warns Edmund not to make such rash moves on motives, just before Nicolette enters. She talks with Edmund, expressing her gratitude for this audience. She states her name as Nicolette Drangueforde. Edmund tells her not to be so formal, and since they are both young, that they should speak freely. Nicolette then does so, and inquires if the Duke is going to stay where he is, in this "remote southern region." Nicolette then proceeds to sow seeds of dissent, by claiming Kelvin has no right to rule over Gustave's lands, even if he was Gustave's closest ally before his death, and that Jade was insignificant while Cantal was alive. She then apologizes to the minister for construing her words as to say Laubholz was inferior to Jade. Nicolette then leaves, and the Minister and the General are preparing for war before Edmund even says anything. Edmund, however, is more concerned with his personal gain - he "wouldn't like to marry a girl that fiesty."

Meanwhile, Nicolette journeys to Gruegel, where she is granted an audience with King Sho of Na. King Sho welcomes her in, and after having her come close to account for his failing Eyesight, requests that she stop being formal and call him "Grandfather Sho." Nicolette asks why King Sho is letting Kelvin do as he pleases, since Jade is a vassal state of Na. King Sho replies it's a Vassal State, yes, but in form only, and Kelvin has consistently treated King Sho with courtesy and respect. Nicolette then continues sowing seeds of distrust by saying the next Count of Jade might not share Kelvin's goodwill. She also emphasizes of what might become of Na after King Sho is dead.

It is outside of King Sho's hall that Nicolette's motivation is revealed - revenge. Five years before, Na had communications with lots of other countries, and Nicolette was studying for etiquette at the court of Na. A few of the girls she is talking to comment on how Cantal has approximately 20 children, and how he is "blessed" with so many. Nicolette is naive at this point and doesn't understand why the girls are laughing at her. At this time, Charles, son of Kelvin, leaves King Sho's chamber, and one of the girls mentions that it makes him her enemy. (Remember, Kelvin and Cantal did not get along.) Nicolette introduces herself, and Charles makes several jokes at her expense - "I smell the whelp of a dog that's always in heat." Nicolette swears she will never forgive him for this.

1290 - Kelvin's final battle

Inside Hahn Nova, Philippe and Charles talk about how Kelvin is worried due to the summons he received from King Sho. Charles suggests they should just ignore him, but Philippe points out that Jade still is, technically, a vassal of Na, and that Kelvin has always respected both King Sui and King Sho. It is here that Charles begins to show his cockyness and recklessness, vowing that Jade now has the power to stand on its own and that King Sho should be "taught a lesson" and that both Philippe and Kelvin are too soft.

At the same time, the army of Laubholz, under Duke Edmund, crosses the Grand Valley north towards Hahn Nova. Charles says Kelvin should stay and rout the Duke of Laubholz, but Kelvin comments he must go to Gruegel and respond to King Sho's summons. Philippe notes that some lords have left the pact and that if Kelvin did, it would crumble. Charles says he will go in Kelvin's stead, and that Kelvin should stay behind and defeat the Duke of Laubholz's army. Kelvin agrees, but tells Charles not to bedisrespectful to King Sho.

The Battle of Salisbury then commences, with Kelvin successfully defeating the Duke of Laubholz. The pact, however, crumbles anyway, and warfare begins once again. Kelvin dies two years later, in 1292.

This concludes Kelvin of Jade's story.
