Wikipedia:Collaboration of the week/Archive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Meikal (talk | contribs) at 11:19, 24 October 2004 (→‎Somalian Civil War). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Each week a Collaboration of the Week will be picked using this page. This is a specific topic which either has no article or a basic stub page, the aim being to have a featured-standard article by the end of the week, from widespread cooperative editing.

The project aims to fill gaps in Wikipedia, to give users a focus and to give us all something to be proud of. Anyone can nominate an article and can vote for the nominated articles. Every Sunday, the votes are tallied, and the winner will be promoted for a week to potential contributors.

Previous winners can be found at /History.
Removed nominations can be found at /Removed.

Selecting the next Collaboration of the Week

The next winner will be selected on Sunday, October 24, 18:00 (UTC).

Voting

Please vote for as many of the following candidates as you like. Please add only support votes. Opposing votes will not affect the result, as the winner is simply the one with the most support votes (see Approval voting).

Only registered users should vote.

To enter your votes, simply edit the appropriate sections by just inserting a new line with "# ~~~~". This will add your username and a time stamp in a new numbered list item.

Tie-breakers

In case of a tie, voting will be extended for 24 hours. If there is still a tie, the candidate that was nominated first wins.

Nominations

New nominations can be made at any time and should be added at the end of this page. Please use the template.

If the page you are nominating already exists, please add COTW to the top of its talk page. This expands to: Template:COTW

Considerations for nominations

  • Please only nominate articles which don't currently exist or are stubs. (Two paragraphs or less of information or fewer than 1,000 characters)
  • Giving reasons as to why an article should become the COTW may assist others in casting their vote.
  • Can the wider community easily contribute to the article? Or is it something only a small number of people will know about?

Pruning

For pages nominated on or after 1 September 2004, the nomination will be moved to /Removed if it has not received 5 votes after 7 days on the list, 10 votes after 14 days, 15 votes after 21 days, and so on. Previously, the pruning limit was 4 votes per week, and the old limit will continue to apply to pages nominated before 1 September 2004. Please see the talk page for discussion of this change in pruning policy.

Candidates for next week

Nominated August 14; needs 44 votes by October 30 (minimum 4 votes per week)

  • Substub. Shame, Wikipedia, shame. Ambi 12:33, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Agfh! Fix it! Tom- 16:36, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Def needs fixing- even more so since TV Coverage is slim to non-existant. Lyellin 09:27, Aug 18, 2004 (UTC)
  • Who cares? The paraolympics don't have a hundredth of the political and cultrual impact of the regular olympics, and there are a lot of other issues which need covering that are a lot more important. EastNile 16:54, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • More important? I suppose you'd prefer for politically and culturally unimportant disabled people to be shut up in institutions.
    • I'd sooner cover this than the "regular" Olympics, which are a nauseating festival of commercialism and idiotic patriotism. Shorne 03:38, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • This is a major topic that needs to be followed as extensively as the Olympics are. RickK 04:57, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)
  • Didn't even realise they were on at the same time, I thought they were scheduled differently. This is different from the Special Olympics though, isn't it? zoney talk 12:51, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • They're not on at the same time, the 2004 paralympics is the 17th to 28th of September. As for not being important, the BBC is showing an hour and a half of coverage per night, so at least one major broadcaster views it as being of some importance. Average Earthman 10:31, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Let's support the under-recognised for once! -- user:zanimum
  • it hasnt even begun yet! why don't you wait until at least a couple months after it's finished to promote it? it doesn't make sense to work it up when there will be much more to add later on. --Jiang 09:52, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • Erm, today is the 12th, Jiang. The Paralympics start on the 17th, and end on the 28th. This is currently third or fourth in line, which means it's almost definitely going to end a week or two after the Paralympics conclude, which is perfect. If it had been nominated any later, it would've actually got to be COTW so late that it would be practically useless, as they would have been over so long before that all the interest would have passed. Ambi 10:29, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
      • People are voting on its current status. There is no guarantee or indication that no one will be interested on the article as the Paralympics are held and the article could very well be improved and not need to be the COTW to be unstubbed (not a stub at the moment and reasonable length for an article on a future event). This would be a waste. I really don't see the logic behind the claim that people will lose interest later on and therefore make this unsuitable for COTW - the point of COTW is to get people's attention. If the article already gets people's attention (like to summer olympics), when why make it the COTW? In this context, my comment really does appear to make a whole lot of sense. --Jiang 11:03, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't all this effort go into Paralympic Games rather than a single event? The 2004 games article is really just a child article of the Paralympic Games parent, and the parent needs help. Filiocht 13:18, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • While I agree that the Paralympic Games article needs work, so does this one. It really needs the attention, and it would help set a standard that could then be used for all previous Paralympics. Ambi 13:29, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Do not count sock puppets. --Jiang 10:42, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • Neutrality, you have voted for this twice. I removed the second one, sorry. - Taxman 17:16, Oct 14, 2004 (UTC)
  • I have to comment: every Olympic year, it drives me crazy that the Olympics get virtually unavoidable media coverage, while most people don't even realize the Paralympics exist. The Globe and Mail even had an editorial pointing out that after all of Canada's handwringing about our athletes' disappointing Olympic performance this year, hardly anybody even noticed that we won 72 medals at the Paralympics. Seventyflippingtwo! Much agreed: a topic that needs to be so much better known than it is. But far be it from mainstream media to celebrate the achievements of the disabled, right? • This is a different kind of project; the article is just a list, that points to all the articles we have in this huge topic. This COTW should aim to make a featured article in best Summary style available. Compare to History of Europe, History of Africa. ✏ Sverdrup 15:09, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Actually this would need a bit more than just summary of the articles currently indexed. There's a hole where the history of Central Asia should be, for one thing. That area may be a backwater now, but you can't tell the story of Asia without a good discussion of the steppe nomads (Huns, Sarmatians, Mongols, etc.) Isomorphic 15:04, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • It seems like this topic doesn't have enough unity to make a good article. Maurreen 23:38, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I agree with Maurreen. This is a terribly broad topic, only a bit narrower than History of the world. Shorne 03:47, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • But still, that is an article. History of Asia is currently just a list. ✏ Sverdrup 15:44, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • A good summary on a topic this big is hard to write, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be useful. Broad overviews are useful for providing context, and for finding holes in the current coverage. Not only that, but this is the sort of topic that collaborative editing is perfect for: the information is widely available, but needs lots of processing to make it into a good article. Isomorphic 17:41, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • I think a super-brief overview would be good, but I think that expanding History of East Asia, or other smaller regions, would a better investment of the effort. I brought up East Asia as an example because of the intricate cultural exchanges and influences (and many wars), all of which in turn allow one to write a cohesive history of that particular region. Bringing up the steppe nomads would be appropriate in an article titled History of Central Asia, or History of West Asia, for example. In addition, many cultures have sprung in different parts of Asia, and for long periods of time have nothing or little to do with each other. One can discuss the Indus valley civilization and history almost independently of the history of the east asian civilizations. Julius.kusuma 23:00, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I think a series of Asian regional histories would probably be a better investment of resources, if possible. A general History of Asia is a massive topic, which may well be utterly impossible to cover adequately in a single article. Bearcat 04:35, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I support the simpler Cuban embargo with the other topics as redirects. - Davodd 19:44, Sep 26, 2004 (UTC)
Support that as a title. Do any other nations have an embargo of Cuba? If so, the article could also deal with them. Warofdreams 14:06, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I would also support that title. It's less likely to promote edit warring. - Taxman 17:38, Sep 27, 2004 (UTC)
  • I disagree. The embargo is perpetrated by the US. To call it a Cuban embargo IMO expresses a US-centric view. I doubt that it would occur to a Cuban to call it a Cuban embargo. While the shorter expression "Cuban embargo" is of course often used as a shorthand, especially inside the US, the above Google statistics are misleading (no criticism intended -- thanks for producing them!). Compare:
    "US embargo" Cuba: 30,400 hits
"US trade embargo" Cuba: 7,200 hits
"US economic embargo" Cuba: 3,320 hits
"US economic sanctions" Cuba: 2,850 hits
Of course we should redirect "Cuban embargo" to the page, but IMO using this as a title would be POV. Fpahl 21:05, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Following WP convention, it should be "U.S." instead of "US" since Americans use the periods. :-) Davodd 23:32, Sep 30, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the reminder :-). I follow that convention on article pages, but I would have thought that I can write how I'm used to on a talk page? BTW, it's people from the U.S. who use the periods. ;-) Fpahl 08:41, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Support what Fpahl said about the title. It is a U.S. led embargo of Cuba and should be titled as such. Oska 07:46, Oct 24, 2004 (UTC)

  • The most common form of war in modern times gets one paragraph and a list. There's a lot to be said about the development of the concept of civil war over the centuries. Also, the effect civil warfare tend to have on a country and its population, economically as well as socially, should certainly be covered.

  • Shamefully short! Should be somewhat about the history of heredity in thought (both human, plant, and animal -- Buffon, Lamarck, Darwin, Galton, Morgan, Lysenko, Watson/Crick, etc.), provide a better linkage to other articles in relation to heredity, controversy surrounding its perceived importance, use of notions of heredity in non-biological fields (sociology, politics), etc. A rich topic will be had for all! --Fastfission 21:53, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • This article is only two lines at the moment.
  • The title, however, should be Somali civil war. Shorne 09:57, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Currently a redirect to History of Somalia. -- ALoan (Talk) 00:08, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • I came to the article to see if I could learn something about the candy I like so much. I was horrified to find a stub where so much more could be said about the stuff. Mgm|(talk) 09:18, Oct 22, 2004 (UTC)
  • I'll contribute to this article if you bring the fudge. Shorne 11:51, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Finally a topic we can sink our teeth into that does not require knowledge of geo-politics. ;-) DAVODD «TALK» 01:39, Oct 23, 2004 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't this be at just fudge, the candy is by far the most common usage. - SimonP 02:07, Oct 23, 2004 (UTC)
