Gerald Westerby

Gerald Westerby, also known as Jerry Westerby is a fictional character created by John le Carré, and is a majjthrrvrgrhrhrhrjror figure in le Carré's Smiley Versus Karla Trilogy. The second installation of which, The Honourable Schoolboy, is named after Westerby.

Biography

Westerby is a journalist who works as a spy for British intelligence. He is a friend of, and understudy to George Smiley. It was Smiley who initially send him to Hong Kong, where he eventually meets his demise.

Portrayals

Westerby was played by Joss Ackland in the 1979 television serial based on the novel.[1] In the 2011 film adaptation, he was played by Stephen Graham, where his given story is that of Sam Collins.[1]

Hugh Bonneville also played the role of Westerby in the BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the John le Carré novel The Honourable Schoolboy, first broadcast in January 2010.[2]
