Updated chronology

The IUGS has issued an update to the statigraphic time scale effective July 2012. See new chart here: [1] This should be incorporated into the protected period templates. MMartyniuk (talk) 09:53, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redundancy

There is a redundant template: Template:Geologic_Ages_Inline. Which one should be kept/replaced? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdfekete (talkcontribs) 18:20, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jdfekete! I created the template "Geologic Ages Inline" because Wikiproject Geology needed a template that returns the timescale ages with their standard error. There is no redundancy because "period_start" and "period_end" don't return standard errors. --Tobias1984 (talk) 17:03, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, merging is a bad idea, because other templates (e.g. Template:Fossil range) require that numbers are displayed without error bars, tildes, etc. If maintaining two sets of numbers is too much work then {{geologic ages inline}} could be modified so that individual lines call {{period start}}. Edit request Hadean

Can you change the date of the Hadean from:

to

  • |hadean|precambrian=4600

Source:

  • "International Chronostratigraphic 2013/01" (PDF). International Commission on Stratigraphy. Retrieved 8 June 2013.

Reason: The beginning of the Hadean is now by definition 4600 Ma (without error). --Tobias1984 (talk) 09:18, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request "This template needs cleaning up"

To me the template layout looks like a mess, with spacing after the dash, unoffical periods not in a seperate place, missing some alternative spellings and some official periods, and dates off by several hundred thousands of years. I cleaned up simple English's wiki edit page 2 months ago. The cleaned up text is shown below, you may copy it into the official template but be sure to check some errors to fix or create the sandbox page to test this.

Updated error margins

The latest chart - http://www.stratigraphy.org/index.php/ics-chart-timescale - appears to have updated many of the error margins from what is currently being used by the template. I haven't checked all of the dates so some of those may also have changed. I would be happy to do the drudge but don't have access so someone else will need to go thru and cross-check all the dates and errors.

One final (important) thing, where the error is an integer value and the reference (ie above-linked chart) lists trailing zeroes (eg 1.0), pls include these in the template as they are an explicit indicator of precision. Thx. 124.169.82.178 (talk) 04:30, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can the following period starts be brought into accordance with ICS V2014/02 (http://www.stratigraphy.org/ICSchart/ChronostratChart2014-02.jpg) This is urgent, since the Wikipedia pages concerned are already changed but this template is protected

period start of Quaternary/Pleistocene/Galasien should be changed from 2.588 to 2.58 Ma and perhaps others, see http://www.stratigraphy.org/ICSchart/ChronostratChart2014-02.jpg

@Jgamleus: Could you add your proposed changes to the template sandbox? It's hard for me to know what to edit from your description, and updating all the data fields would be quite intensive work. If you can update the sandbox first, that would simplify things considerably. Best — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 06:47, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Refactoring

While merging from {{Geologic Ages Inline}}, I have done a major refactoring of {{Period start}} to make the code better readable and to correspond well with {{Period start ref}}. Please review this year's changes to the sandbox and then replace the production code with my last version. The testcases may help you; you can see there that the new code accepts both spaces and hyphens as word separators. Petr Matas 15:50, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As the proposal above has not been opposed for a month, I am requesting the code of this template to be overwritten with my last version from the sandbox. Petr Matas 21:30, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Petr Matas: It's expected that the sandbox allows 3 extra cases that the current live template does not, right? The changes look all right otherwise to me.
