Anton Borisovich Nossik (Russian: Анто́н Бори́сович Но́сик; July 4, 1966 – July 9, 2017) was a start-up manager, journalist, social activist and popular Russian blogger (10th place in RuNet according to Yandex[1]). Sometimes he is called one of the fathers of the Russian Internet[2]or the first Russian-language blogger in the history[3]. He was editor of the largest online news publications Vesti.ru, Lenta.ru,[4] Gazeta.ru and NEWSru.com.

One of the former managers of Rambler and blogging service holding company SUP Media (participated in this capacity in the LiveJournal service acquisition), the founder of Pomogi.org Charitable Foundation.[5] Since mid-October 2009 he was appointed Deputy General Director of United Media and, concurrently, the position of chief editor Bfm.ru. From 16 November 2011 to 29 November 2012 was the media director of SUP Media, which owns the LiveJournal service. In the middle of 2014 co-founded Fuzzy cheese,[6] a market and public opinion research company.[7]

Biography

In 2011 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with representatives of the Russian internet community, including Anton Nossik.

Born in the family of the writer Boris Nossik and philologist-polonist Victoria Mochalova.[8] His father in 2011 was elected an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. Stepfather — artist Ilya Kabakov. He has a sister Sandra, who teaches sociolinguistics at the French University of Franche-Comte.[7]

Nossik died on 9 July 2017 at the age of 51 in Pirogovo, Mytishchinsky District, Moscow Oblast, in the summer house of his friends.[9][10][11][12]

Activism

He was a co-chair of the first roundtable on the introduction of Creative Commons licenses in the Russian Federation in 2008 [13][14]. His photos are available under CC-BY-2.0 and CC-BY-3.0 licenses [15].

In March 2013 he took part in a series of pickets for the liberation of the members of Pussy RiotMaria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova.[16]

He took part in the Ukraine — Russia: Dialogue conference, which took place April 24–25, 2014 in Kiev.[17]

A member of the public council of the Russian Jewish Congress.[18]

The accusation of extremism

At the end of 2015 Anton Nossik was under a criminal investigation under part 1 of article 282 the Russian Criminal Code (incitement of hatred or enmity) for a blog post about Syria. According to the prosecution, on October 1, 2015 Nossik published the post titled Erase Syria from the face of the earth,[19] in which, according to а linguistic expertise solicited by the prosecution, signs of inciting hatred against the Syrians, based on the national-territorial principle were detected.[20]

On September 19, 2016, the prosecution asked to sentence Nossik to two years imprisonment.[21] On October 3, 2016, the Presnya court of Moscow convicted Nossik and sentenced him to a fine of 500 thousand roubles.[22] On December 15, 2016, Moscow city court reduced the fine to 300 thousand roubles. In January 2017, an appeal to the conviction was accepted for hearing by the ECHR.

Death

Nossik died from a heart attack at the night of 9 July, 2017.[23]
