Camp Gallagher is a co-ed overnight summer camp primarily for middle schoolers and high schoolers located on the shores of Case Inlet in Lakebay, Washington[1]. It was founded in 1970[2].

Camp Gallagher is operated by Friends of Camp Gallagher, a non-religious, community-based nonprofit, and is accredited by the American Camping Association[3].

Standort

Camp Gallagher is set on more than 155 acres of South Puget Sound wilderness made up of sandy beachfront, grass lawns and wooded areas[4]. It is situated due west of both Harstine Island and McMicken Island, and off the southeast corner of Herron Island, all of which are visible from Camp Gallagher.

History

CYO Era (1970-2015)

Camp Gallagher was originally founded in 1970 by the Archdiocese of Seattle's Catholic Youth Organization[5].

Camp Closure and Sale (2010-2015)

The Seattle Archdiocese closed Camp Gallagher in Fall 2010[6] and, in 2015, announced it was selling the property[7][8]. Following the announcement, former Camp Gallagher campers, parents and staff members launched an effort to buy and reopen the camp. On July 30, 2015, the property was sold to a party previously unaffiliated with Camp Gallagher. The new owners agreed to lease the property to the group that had been rallying to save the camp[9]. The group formed the Friends of Camp Gallagher nonprofit in 2015[10].

Friends of Camp Gallagher Era (2015-Present)

Friends of Camp Gallagher re-opend Camp Gallagher summer programming in June 2016, carrying on many of the same traditions from the camp's history[11][12].

Programs

Classic Summer Camp

Camp Gallagher's primary camping program, Classic Summer Camp features 8- to 9-day sessions, wherein middle school or high school aged campers live at camp, sleeping in rustic wooden cabins, eating meals in the camp dining hall, "Sequim," and engaging in camping activities under the supervision of the camp's staff. Campers live in single-gender lodge groups of 10 to 12[13].

Waterfront

Many activities at Camp Gallagher center around its Puget Sound waterfront, including: paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, canoeing and big canoeing (12-seater canoes)[14].

Sundown

A long-standing tradition at Camp Gallagher is the daily sundown gathering, where the whole camp comes together to watch the sunset, talk about their experiences at camp, share stories and sing songs, including "Hurry Sundown" by Peter, Paul and Mary[15].

Campfire

Campers at Camp Gallagher end each day with a campfire on the beach where campers lead each other in camp songs. Songs start loud and fast, and then get gradually slower as the campfire goes on[16].

Overnights

The Classic Summer Camp program includes one- to two-night overnights, where lodge groups leave main camp by kayak, sailboat or canoe to a public campsite somewhere on the South Puget Sound. Campers and staff sleep outdoors, cook meals over a campfire and schedule their journeys according to the tides[17].

Gallagher Expeditions

Gallagher Expeditions is a trekking camp for high schoolers based out of the Camp Gallagher property. Gallagher Expeditions campers leave main camp for 5- to 6-day excursions by land (backpacking trips) or sea (big canoe trips)[18].

Family Camp

Camp Gallagher's Family Camp program is a two-night mini version of summer camp available to families with kids of all ages[19].

Men's and Women's Camp

Before the youth summer camping season begins, Camp Gallagher hosts a Men's Camp (21+) and a Women's Camp (21+) over two separate weekends in June[20].
