Paul Zacharia writes in Malayalam under the pen-name ‘Zacharia’ and has published over 50 works of fiction and non-fiction, including short stories, novellas, travelogues, film-scripts, collections of essays/columns, and children’s books. Zacharia’s first story was published in 1964. His fiction has been translated into several other Indian languages and into English and German as well.

Born Mundattuchundayil Paul Scaria (M.P. Scaria) on June 5, 1945, in Urulikunnam, in Kerala’s Kottayam District, Zacharia was the youngest of three children of M. S. Paul, Mundattuchundayil, a farmer, and Thresiakutty Paul, his wife. M.P. Joseph (late) is his brother and Rev. Sr. Mary Mundattuchundayil is his sister.

Early life

Zacharia began studies at Sree Dayananda Primary School, Urulikunnam and continued at St Joseph’s High School, Vilakumadom. Finishing school in 1960, he joined the Pre-University Course in St Thomas College, Pala. In 1961, he joined St Philomena’s College, Mysuru, for a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, History, and Economics. In 1964, after graduating, he joined Central College, Bengaluru, to pursue a Master’s in English Literature.

In 1966, after obtaining his Master’s, Zacharia worked for a year as lecturer in English at MES College, Malleswaram, Bengaluru. Later he taught at St. Dominic’s College, Kanjirappally, Kerala(1967-71)as well. In 1971, he moved to Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu as Area Manager for the Ruby Tyre and Rubber Works, Bengaluru. The following year, he relocated to New Delhi where, for the next two decades, he worked in publishing and the media with organisations such as the Affiliated East-West Press, All India Management Association (AIMA), Press Trust of India (PTI) and ‘India Today’ Malaylam edition.

In 1992, Zacharia returned to Kerala, as part of the founding team of the Asianet (Malayalam) satellite TV channel. He co-hosted on Asianet, the show ‘Patravisesham’, Malayalam’s first TV review of the print media, with senior journalist BRP Bhaskar, for seven years.

Literary career

Zacharia writes regularly for Kerala’s leading newspapers and magazines, and has been a public speaker for over two decades. His columns and articles in English have also appeared in national periodicals such as ‘India Today’, ‘Outlook’, ‘The Week’, ‘The Hindu’ ‘The Deccan Herald,’ ‘The Pioneer’, ‘The Times of India’ ‘The Economic Times’, ‘The Hindustan Times,’ ‘Tehelka’, ‘The New Indian Express’ and ‘The Indian Express’.

A keen traveller, Zacharia has published travelogues on Africa, England, Saudi Arabia, and China, as well as the Kumbh Mela. In his writing career spanning six decades, he has been the recipient of several awards and honours such as the Kendra Sahitya Akademi (Indian Academy of Literature) Award and Kerala Sahitya Akademi (Kerala Academy of Literature) Award. In November 2013 he was elected a Distinguished Fellow of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.

Paul Zacharia is a member of the Press Club of India, New Delhi and Trivandrum Club, Thiruvananthapuram. He lives in Thiruvananthapuram, and is married to Lalitha. They have a daughter and a son.
