Joachim Neander

Joachim Neander (1650 - May 31 1680) was a teacher and protestantic priest, but became famous for creating the words to the church choral Praise to the Lord, the Almighty (german: Lobet den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren) in 1679. In his honor the valley of the small Düssel river was renamed to Neanderthal (Neander valley), which became famous later when the remains of the Neanderthal was found there.
Joachim Neander was born in Bremen as child of a latin teacher. His grandfather, a musician, had according to fashion of that time changed the family name from the original "Neumann" (Newman in english) to the greek Neander.
