The account User:Byenzer has not made an edit in over 5 years. If you attached an email address to your account you should be able to use that to recover your password. If not, there isn't much else that can be done. Strange semicolon on contributions page

I have lately been seeing a strange semicolon on the contributions page, not just for me, but for any other user as well. It's in the timestamp column. For example, my latest contribution before this one shows up as:

(But with the links styled as MediaWiki internal links instead of external links like above. I'd have to modify the MediaWiki source code to show them here exactly as they appear, but you catch my drift.)

About Ian.Thomson abusing Admin privilege

It seem one of your administrator doing some abuse since some time now. It even insult people on their talk page, and do not respect Wikipedia rules about articles. Please do something about him to stop abusing and harrasing people, to stop him from censuring informations on article and so on. Still waiting for you to show me the rule that says other people can't remove content you added because it has a blue link. Yes, you did find something suggesting that it'd be nice if one adds a source for something they can find a reliable source for, but it doesn't say "don't remove it if there's a blue link. Discouraging editors from adding their freshly invented esolang to Esoteric programming language

Currently, I have added a comment in the examples section to notify editors that this is discouraged, but I was wondering if a hatnote with a interwiki link to the esolang wiki, like esolang:Main Page, notifying readers that further examples can be found there (and should be put on there, as it is a wiki for them, after all), would be appropriate.

Adding alt text to infoboxes

Hello! I've been pretty interested in improving the accessibility of Wikipedia, and I noticed that most infoboxes don't have alt text, which allows people with screen readers or with images turned toff to know what a image is. But, since most infoboxes are hosted in userspace I wanted to make sure it would be okay to edit them and add alt text. Would it be ok to add alt text to infoboxes, or should I individually ask every single creator of infoboxes if it's ok to add? I'd think it would be the prior, but I just want to make sure. Dear Wikipedia,

Please edit the information on this ship to include this reason it sunk at Pearl Harbor, HI. Yes, it's electrical supply was down, but the reason it sunk was this. It was hit portside by two torpedoes causing it to capsize on that side. Lt. Pharris commanded for the starboard magazines to be flooded, which my dad did, with whoever assisted him. Here is the very sentence in Wikipedia on Lt. Jackson Pharris (Medal of Honor Recipient, USS California BB-44) which proves that this is true. It may have not been understood until now: "With water and oil rushing in where the port bulkhead had been torn up from the deck, with many of the remaining crewmembers overcome by oil fumes, and the ship without power and listing heavily to port as a result of a second torpedo hit, Lt. Pharris ordered the shipfitters to counterflood." I do not know what is meant by "ship fitters." My dad (Henry G. Thompson) was a Gunner's Mate, at that time and knew the ship well, having it being his home-ship for a little over 10 years.

Does this fit in Wikipedia?

I want to know if Wikipedia is the right page for a proposed "List of train departures in China", where I plan to put down the two termini for each train departure, after my previous page (which included all the stops as well as the time of arrival/departure was proposed for deletion (and I requested its deletion). @Bamboopark: Basically, you don't, because you have a conflict of interest. However, if you wish to attempt it anyway, then please read our guidelines. In a nutshell:

Declare your paid status on your user page. This is mandatory and is part of the terms of service imposed by the owners of this web site. See WP:PAID.
Ensure that your subject is notable by our definition, not yours. See WP:N. If your subject is notable, we will get an article in here somehow even if we get off to a rocky start. If the subject is not notable, then then there is nothing you or anyone else can do to keep the article in Wikipedia, no matter how wonderful it is in every other respect.
Carefully review the above point on notability. We are serious about this. Really. Do not waste your time and ours by ignoring this point.
Go read and heed WP:YFA for guidance about actually producing a draft.
Submit your new draft.

What you may not realise, Bamboopark, is that your aims as a publicist, and Wikipedia's aims as an encyclopaedia, are not the same, and may sometimes be opposed. Your concern, quite properly, is to present your client in a good light. Wikipedia does not care whether a subject is presented in a good light or not; it only cares what independent, reliably published, sources have said about the subject. If a certain critic has praised your client, then the article may certainly say "XXX has described Lewis as YYY", with a citation (but an article must not say "Lewis is YYY" in Wikipedia's voice). But if another critic has panned your client in another reliable publication, the article should equally report that. And you and your client will not have any control over what is put in the article: you can make suggestions, but nothing more. --ColinFine (talk) 18:12, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bamboopark. Just checking, I only see one mention of "Rege Lewis" in a film which has an article on Wikipedia: States of Grace, is this correct? Whether or not an actor is notable isn't necessarily tied to whether the movies that they have been in have articles (or are notable themselves) (while not applying to your client, there are porn actors/actresses who have gotten industry wide awards, but none of their movies have reached notability level) but rather coverage in 3rd party publications. Well, my question is the following: - I'm about to create an article of a Niger's football soccer referee who now works for Niger military and was banned for life by FIFA for bribery and corruption. I can't get on my account

Wikipedia will not let me sign in. I wrote down my Wikipedia password and tried to enter that but it said it was incorrect. I then entered my email asking to re-set my password. Issue with table formatting

I recently updated and expanded the table showing the list of earthquakes that is part of the 2019 Cotabato earthquakes article. I can't get one of the entries to display properly in the table, the one for October 20 at 11:50:35. The double "pipe" character is just shown as two lines rather than being used to move to the next cell. I can't see what's wrong with the formatting that's causing this problem. Using a lecture as a cited source

If a notable person gives a lecture in a public forum telling about his life, can this be considered a reliable source? We are talking about information not likely to be contested, such as who influenced him, etc. Is it considered "original research"? What if the lecture is not published in print, but the audio is recorded (and thus verifiable)? Is there a citation template for a lecture? Hello, Lamp123kid. We require that the source be published (so that in principle, anybody can get hold of a copy - though it doesn't have to be easy, or free of charge) reliably (so it's not just a random person - or even the lecturer - putting it up on their personal blog or website). But if it meets those requirements, then yes, it can be cited as a source. I don't think there is a policy which says whether to cite the lecture or the transcript (or both) in that case. Edits in your bio

I notice a lot of activity in my bio that removes important information or reports erroneous stuff. It takes away any reference to my living in Nogales, Arizona and El Centro, California. Going to School in England, (St. Ignatius College) winning the American Legion Boys' nation Presidency in 1983 (it links to American Legion Boys' Nation)

@Donallogue:, please also note that even if it you were to add such material, it ought to and probably would be removed unless it was cited to a published Reliable source independent of yourself. All facts in Wikipedia must be verified by such citations so that readers can confirm for themselves, if they wish, that they are not inventions inserted by mischievous third parties pretending to be you: such things do happen here. Hello, Naye Ayla. Writing a new article is one of the hardest tasks on Wikipedia, and I always advise new editors to spend a few weeks or months improving some of our six million existing articles before they try it, so they can learn how Wikipedia works and what not to do. If you do write an article about the artist, remember, that it must be almost entirely based on what people unconnected with the artist have chosen to publish about them (Wikipedia is not interested in what the artist says about themselves, or what their associates say - and that will include any galleries or exhibitions who have shown them), and it must be neutral in tone, not promotional in any way. If there is not enough independently published material about them, then they do not meet Wikipedia's criteria of notability, and no article on them will be accepted however it is written. But if you want to try it, please start by reading your first article.

Two more caveats: if you have come here because you want to tell the world about the artist, or to help improve their online presence: that is promotion, and is incompatible with the purposes of Wikipedia. Edit help

I have made Plot summary for Blaze (2018 film). When I went back to edit the second paragraph, the new type characters fill in about seven spaces back. I have two sentences to add but there seems to be a blank space I cannot type. I closed the article to go back in and that did not help. Please go to the article to see my problem. List of postage stamps of Pakistan

List of postage stamps of Pakistan appears on the list of April Articles Requiring a Copy Edit list at the Community Portal. April and several other months are being "cleaned up" by a GOCE backlog blitz. I am in the process of editing this article, however, there is no "Copy Edit" tag on the article that I can find. I'm not sure how to "remove" it from this list in this case. Normally, once the "Copy Edit" tag is removed it "disappears" from the list. Changing UK/US spelling in quotations

This edit changed "normalising" to "normalizing" - but note that it happened within a WP:QUOTE. I find this to be a tampering of what was actually said, albeit a very minor one. Wikipedia is run by the Wikimedia Foundation which decided in 2015 to only use https.[1] I read this help desk daily and don't recall another complaint. Which browser and version are you using? First of all, please note that this is just what I think is going on from what I know about security certificate. We require a certificate to make sure that the data being sent back and forth will not be intercepted and changed. Obviously, if you could post here, you managed to work it out somehow.

If it was possible to access Wikipedia via HTTP, it would be possible (for instance) for the Chinese government to alter how pages pertaining to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests appear.

Is it a price worth paying to maintain HTTP compatibility? From a quick search it seems that Firefox and Google Chrome have been supporting HTTPS since at least 2011. I doubt the other browsers (Safari, Opera, IE) were behind by much. Browsers without HTTPS support are not "old", they are ancient, and dangerous to use because of unpatched vulnerabilities. Italic title

Minor coding issue: I cannot figure out why the page title for Aleluya (En La Tierra) is half in italics and half not. I tried the "Italic title" template but it did not work. It was fixed with {{Italic title|all=yes}} combined with |italic_title=no in the infobox to avoid a clash.[2] {{Italic title}} and infoboxes which add italics assume by default that text in parentheses is disambiguation, e.g. "(album)", and should not have italics. IHS Markit: TALK says PROD, article has In_Use/7 days no activity, but no AfD

There are two issues regarding IHS Markit, each involving a different fellow editor:

In Use, but no activity for seven days.

I could just take off the In use but that would be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. I don't see this as a crisis-level/ANI, but . . . this needs some intervention. Thanks.

A PROD does not require (and should not have) an AFD. It's a short form of deletion for what is believed to be a non controversial case that does require an AFD. In this case the concerns were addressed and the PROD was removed by user:DGG on Nov 1. Teh tal kpage notice is just a notice that the article was prodded, which means that it cannot be prodded again.

I suspect the IP refers to William B. Taylor Jr. Wikipedia is not a political platform. We present subjects neutrally, with reliable sources. In regards to the Bill Taylor I linked, we do not list his political party because he is not a politician and reliable sources did not mention his political affiliation. He seems to be a career diplomat, and not an elected official, and thus his political affiliation was not relevant. We do not change articles to help or hurt any particular politician, and try very hard to ensure articles are neutral and complete. We are all volunteers, and may have missed something however. If you think something is incorrect or missing, you are welcome to propose changes to the article on its talk page, keeping in mind that any additions must have a reliable source to back them up. @Revirvlkodlaku: You will need to determine the license on that image. It has a green (c) symbol which may mean it is licensed freely, but I'm not sure. We don't allow non-free images of living people on English Wikipedia. If you determine that it is freely licensed, then you can save a copy to your computer then upload it to commons. "redirecting" should probably be translated as "linking" and any copy at other wikis should at a minimum link to kapanlagi.com. But https://company.kapanlagi.com/tos/ includes according to Google Translate: "User agrees not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade, resell, or otherwise use for commercial purposes any of the materials contained in the KapanLagi.com™ service, without the prior written consent of KapanLagi.com™". I have been looking at page viewing statistics for some articles, and I would like to know if someone with knowledge of On 5 March 2019, it was 4326. Starting on 6 March 2019, I see 55,573 pageviews. By the way, that was Ash Wednesday. On 15 April 2019, I see 284,992 pageviews. That wasn't Easter, by the way. Easter was 21 April 2019, and was 256,054 pageviews. The pageview metrics drop off in May 2019, but then fluctuate between thousands of pageviews and hundreds of thousands of pageviews. Removal of an Article

Hello,

Could I kindly ask that an article is deleted as it is inaccurate and duplicates information.

The article page is called "RAF Worthy Down". I am a member of the organisation and have been asked to rectify this issue by the head of the organisation.

The two articles which contain accurate information are "Worthy Down Barracks" and "UK Defence College of Policing and Administration". Please note the second article was recently submitted and is still under review.

If you are aware of inaccuracies at RAF Worthy Down, you should give details at its talk page, preferably with citations that support your claims. Then the article can be corrected. If I see it correctly, I have made three insertions. One is a factual description of a new technology in the field of Airborne Wind Energy. My quote:

Crosswind Technology

“With X-Wind technology, automatically controlled kites pull current-producing ground vehicles on an oval track.”

What is the difference to:

The third insertion was the web address of a company working in the field of the article. This insertion has only completed the list of all other existing actors.

I cannot see to what extent these contributions should have been advertising. I ask for a factual explanation of the decision instead of a blanket rejection.

Help with User Page Formatting

Hey guys, I normally consider myself pretty good at editing Wikipedia but I have no clue how to fix the formatting on my user page. I'm trying to put my "Medal Record" floating, pinned to the left, the image of the USS Atlantis in the center of the page, and different collapsible tables pinned to the right, one on top of the other. No matter what I do, it seems like the two tables on the right end up messed up. I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can figure out what I'm doing wrong. How to do multiple independent edits

There are two approaches to making a change that can be separated into multiple edits which are independent from each other. It can also be applied as one edit.

What is the preferred method in Wikipedia?

An example is a change that replaces an incorrect statement by a correct statement. Assuming the article is consistent after only removing the incorrect statement, doing so is a valid edit that solves the problem that the page was incorrect. It could be done alone, adding the replacement in a separate edit. Both could also be done in one edit.

Other examples are making a change in orthography while making a change in meaning, or adding content to multiple independent paragraphs. The latter could create a potentially long sequence of edits of the same person.

The use of separate edits has the advantage of preserving semantic structure, allowing separate reverts, and motivating much stronger to comment on every change in the publishing comments, rather than commenting it in summary.

It's really just up to you. In your first example, I'd say replacing with the correct statement in one edit would be preferable. In your second example, expanding on multiple paragraphs at once is also fine to do in a single edit. @Þjarkur: Perfect, thanks! That is exactly what I would think is best! Is it documented in some howto? (I did not find it) I see it as very relevant. Commonly doing it like that would create a substantial increase in information content of the metadata of Wikipedia. As a computer scientist, I see that on the background of managing program source code and related files. A large part of that is that it causes a very large increase in documentation of the separate changes. I found that for me, and see reasons to expect it to be the case for others: When publishing a small, self contained change, it is easy to write a short comment describing it. It may even be available in the short term memory. And it is a conceptual thing. It does not feel like a great effort to write a short comment in the process of publishing. A comment for a multi part change involve the long term memory, and I typically do not feel motivated to iterate all changes and often comment from the short term memory plus some incomplete summary of all other points. How should I fix a missing population number in this Caribbean Netherlands article?

After this revision the population is missing from Caribbean Netherlands. In the Legal Status section, the text reads "The population of the Caribbean Netherlands is .". How can this be fixed? Go to Preferences > Editing > Editing mode > Show me both editor tabs. Then clicking on "Edit" should open up the Visual Editor. Failed edit save

Greetings, keepers of the eternal flame!

Twice recently I have made some lengthy edits on a draft article, User:MinorProphet/Draft subpages/HMS Cyclops (1839), using the standard text editor. I'm using Firefox 47.0.1 on XP Professional, which is obviously somewhat out of date, but I have made no changes to Firefox or XP for some time and I normally have no problems.
I have kept the edit window open for a number of hours, using the Show Preview button often. Normally when I enter an edit summary and save after some time, I get the usual red message "We could not process your edit due to a loss of session data." (I seem to remember that the standard timeout is about 25 minutes.) Clicking Publish Changes once more normally results in success.
However, on these two occasions when I clicked Publish Changes, the entire tab and edit window was redrawn with very small fonts; then the standard fonts reappeared, but all the changes I had made had completely disappeared along with the edit summary, and I was left with the edit window as if I had just opened it. I've made a number of short edits on this draft and on other live articles with no problems. I'm well aware that saving more frequently might be better practice, or saving the draft to a local .txt file as a backup, but I have had no difficulty up till now.
Any suggestions please as to why this might have happened/how to avoid or fix it? I looked at the MediaWiki Manual:How to debug/Login problems but it seems to be for sysadmins and not users. A somewhat disconsolate MinorProphet (talk) 02:54, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
