Parker Academy
The Parker Academy was located in New Richmond, Ohio and was founded in 1839. The Parker Academy was originally named the Clermont Academy. This Academy was one of the first Ohio schools which offered an education to both boys and girls regardless of race. Many of the early students were runaway enslaved people. The campus included a classroom building, a men's dorm and another dorm for women. The women's dorm still stands, now a private residence. The Academy may have been the first school in Ohio to offer this choice. The founders of the academy were Daniel and Priscilla Parker, who were staunch abolitionists.
One of the noted alumni is Charles W. Currier who served as a Lieutenant of Company “G” 12th Kentucky United States Colored Heavy Artillery. Later in life he became a minister.
Parker Academy closed in 1889.
Northern Kentucky University faculty and students began the first excavation of the Parker Academy site in May of 2015. This project has received support from the Ford Foundation. In 2017, the National Science Foundation awarded a $336,300 grant to the Northern Kentucky University’s the project.
