Culture of Sabah

The geometrical patterns adorned the acoustic wall of the Convention Centre is inspired by the several patterns of "Mangavol" or weaving that is distinctive to the Rungus, which is one of the local tribes of Sabah.

The unique timber carvings of "Nantuapan" pattern decorated the interior of the lounge is inspired by an exquisite motif of the Murut tribe in Sabah which symbolizes a gathering of people and unity.

Another carving pattern that is inspired by the ornate feature of "Lepa-Lepa" originated from Palau' Bajau of Semporna district at the eastern coast of Sabah. The patterns are usually inspired from Quran or floral motif that requires high craftsmen skill.

Nature in Sabah

Guests are welcomed by the granite cladded columns paired with contrastive hues of polished flooring upon arrival. The distinctive depth of the design is inspired by the jagged peaks of Mount Kinabalu, the symbol and pride of Sabah as well as the highest mountain on the island of Borneo and one of the world's prominent peaks.

The unique features of mangroves is incorporated as carved wall arts along the precinct of the pre-function area of the exhibition hall, as Sabah is one of the home to many mangrove forests which include two of the famous ramsar sites in Malaysia which are Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre and Lower Kinabatangan Segama Wetlands.

The different blue tones of the carpet in the Convention Hall and one of the meeting rooms are inspired by the distinct feature of Sabah's unique wonder and beauty of its marine life and pristine tropical waters.

As for the most distinct feature of the Convention Hall, the chandelier was inspired by the exoskeleton of a curvature of a seashells and the ripples of the sea.

Wildlife of Sabah

The luminated floral pattern on the ceiling of the lobby feature is inspired by one of the rarest flowers in the world and is native to rainforest of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah which is the Rothschild's Slipper Orchid. It is known as the "Gold of Kinabalu" or "Sumazau Orchid" by the local.

The palm-like pattern of the floor carpet at the foyer of convention hall is inspired by the widely distributed and useful mangrove palm which also called as "Nipa" has a wide diversity of use by the Sabahan as roof materials, medicine and sap that can be fermented to alcohol which famously known as "Bahar" or Palm wine.
