Where do I list an article that needs work?

I recently added a section to Talk:Holocaust Studies about it needing work. Where can I announce that link in this Project so it gets eyeballs appropriately? (Please ping me here to reply.) Mathglot (talk) 21:56, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

AfD for Holocaust historian

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Daniel Romanovsky I started the original article and voted neutral on the AfD. The deleters actually have a good case based on WP policy, but something doesn't feel right. Thanks. Thoughtmonkey (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 03:12, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

IP continually deleting sourced text and a category at The Hoax of the Twentieth Century

67.80.32.237 (talk · contribs) has been deleting not only Category:Antisemitic publications from this article but sourced text describing it as antisemitic. Their latest edit summary is "The people listing the book as anti-semitic are going by the notion that it follows anti-Jewish conspiracies involving reparations and Israel-Palestinian wars. None of these sources list examples of this, yet include real examples like Jews and Their Lies". This is pretty much the CODOH line, eg [1]. I raised this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism but this is probably the best place, I forgot it existed!. Doug Weller talk 18:10, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not doing this to be disruptive. I'm removing the category and the claims of it being anti-semitic because it doesn't even fit Wikipedia's own article description of the connection between that and Holocaust Denial. The article states that Holocaust Denial is often linked to this because many people hold the belief that it's an elaborate scheme to advance Jewish financial interest and stand as a shield for Israel's activities in the Gaza Strip. The reason why there's a difference is because The Holocaust wan't primarily a Jewish massacre, but also the murder of 5 million non Jews. Where do you see in the sources that Butz has written about either of these anti-Jewish ideas? Yes, the sources say the book is anti-semitic, but there is no backbone to such claims. If the book had said something along the lines of "The Jews exaggerated their experiences after the climax of World War II to gain money from the German&UN authorities, which was passed down to the children of Holocaust survivors. Jews in present day Israel use the Holocaust to justify ethnic cleansing and the murder of innocent civilians of Palestine to expand Israel's landmass." ; this would make the book anti-semitic. That's not an opinion, it's an unbiased fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.80.32.237 (talk) 18:58, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to respond to Doug's comment by saying that this is not a copy & paste from CODOH, or Hannover's thread. As a matter of fact, these criteria points aren't even raised by that thread. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.80.32.237 (talk) 19:29, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I didn't say it was copy/paste. We go by what sources say, not editors' analysis of them or a book. And since it's a fact that it's described as antisemitic, the category is appropriate. Doug Weller talk 20:56, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Do they explain how it's anti-semitic? Nope, they just say so. And this isn't helping the case in point in here when you consider that Wikipedia's own article on Holocaust Denial states that not all denial claims are anti-semitic - they just are if the criteria provided is met. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.80.32.237 (talk) 21:24, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Doug Weller: I believe it's a sock of this guy. AnotherNewAccount (talk) 16:20, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am no sock. I'm just an IP editor following the information given. You don't need to resort to personal attacks when I've done nothing wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.80.32.237 (talk) 21:54, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what you are, but I agree you aren't a sock of that editor. Of course you've done something wrong, you've deleted well sourced material. Another IP has just made the "revisionism isn't antisemitism" arguement at Ernst Zündel, a bigot who is a noted antisemite. And you seem to think that 'whoever put the book on Google' is an antisemite, which is just weird. The basis of the argument is that the Jews were lying. Never mind, I know I can never convince an antisemite they are wrong. Or someone who through ignorance supports them. Doug Weller talk 17:18, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

List of Most Wanted Nazi War Criminals according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center

Forgive me if this is not the appropriate Wikiproject in which to raise this matter. I'm wondering what should be done with the article List of Most Wanted Nazi War Criminals according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The SWC was releasing annual lists for several years but this appears to have stopped, there's been no new list for two years, though last year a list of war criminals awaiting prosecution was released. I'm wondering if the article needs to be rewritten or renamed in order to reflect the fact that this is no longer, or is becoming, a historical list rather than a current one. Thanks. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:58, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Anne Frank at List of LGBT Jews

Just bringing this up here because it was a surprise to me: Anne Frank is listed at List of LGBT Jews since January this year with this edit. I only inspected one of the sources and it was tied back to a Wordpress blog. Maybe people in this project want to investigate further. ☆ Bri (talk) 00:50, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See her diary, and this on pinknews (a RS? No idea). It seems this idea has been floating around - with some PRIMARY basis - but I don't think it is established enough.Icewhiz (talk) 13:54, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The three sources are not overly reliable. I also noticed they did not really say straighforward that she was lesbian. Apart from that, even if there is an omitted paragraph in her diary that says that at age 13 she was interested in touching another female's breast, that does not make her lesbian: that is simple adolescent curiosity. And here I don't even take into account the urge of many LGBT activists to try and turn everybody into such, for political reasons rather than as a matter of historical truth. I think this is the case here. Debresser (talk) 13:59, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Insubstantial evidence. She was thirteen when she expressed fascination with female bodies. We don't extrapolate from that to adult sexual orientation. Bus stop (talk) 14:26, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
To be clear - I don't think that adolescent experiments, without a substantial relationship, would qualify for classifying her either which way on sexuality - particularly since this does not seem to be a topic in mainstream secondary coverage. Those who are making this claim, do have a semblance of a basis to do so, but it is rather shaky.Icewhiz (talk) 15:16, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not enough basis. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:04, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish history barnstar?

Is there a barnstar one can award to others for their contribution to JH topics? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:27, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Piotrus. There is no barnstar specifically for contributions to Jewish historical topics, but there are two "Jewish barnstars", Template:The New Jewish Barnstar and Template:The Jewish Barnstar. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 02:20, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Malik. In such a case, I'd like to nominate two users for either of these awards, User:Icewhiz and User:Poeticbent. I am well aware I could just give those stars myself, but I don't want to due to wiki-COI, and I'd prefer is a member of this project with a longer standing (I officially joined just yesterday) would review their contributions instead. I feel that those awards would have more meaning if they came from someone beside myself. Poeticbent lists his DYKs and such at the bottom of his userpage, he created dozens of Jewish history topics (including 17 articles on WWII ghettos, for example). Icehwiz does a lot of work on ensuring neutrality in related topics, and also deserves a recognition, IMHO. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:02, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1143 pogrom in Ham

I managed to find only one single reliable source for this event, listed at Timeline of antisemitism--this book, here. (There's a few books by someone called David Birnbaum but they are self-published and I think they use Wikipedia as a source.) What's odd is that even that book, published by Oxford UP, lists no source. Can we do better than that? Thanks! Drmies (talk) 20:21, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am unable to find any reference to it in the 22-volume Encyclopaedia Judaica (second edition). There are no articles about the town of Ham or the region of Somme, and the article about France doesn't mention Ham or 1143 (between the First and Second Crusades). It says the first extant written legal act by a French king dates from 1144 (it concerns French Jews). France's first blood libel was in Blois in 1171, resulting in the deaths of 31 Jews, followed by similar accusations elsewhere. In 1182, the king expelled the Jews from France and seized their property. This affected few Jews because the kingdom of France was very small and the king had little influence over nearby nobles. In 1198, he authorized their return. And so on.
Except for references to the son of Noah and a Biblical city in Transjordan, Ham doesn't appear in the encyclopedia's 900-page index, nor does Somme. The encyclopedia's article about pogroms is limited to Russia between the 1880s and 1920s. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 03:31, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish ghettos in Europe is bad and confused

This is a really confused article. It's basically a list of everything called a "ghetto" at any time in European history, including East End of London apparently just because it was a Jewish neighborhood similar to the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Most of the "ghettos" listed in this article are actually Nazi ghettos. I think it would be best to keep the focus rather on the discrete topic of traditional ghettos before the Jewish emancipation period (which was of course differenr times in different countries)..--Pharos (talk) 00:08, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

State-sponsored antisemitism in Europe before the start of WW2

Greetings. I've came across several sources which state that the Romanian Government of Octavian Goga (December 1937 - February 1938) was the second antisemitic Government in Europe, after that of Germany. This makes me wonder: Were there any more until September 1939? Or - besides this brief Romanian episode - was it only Nazi Germany and the territories it annexed? WW2 vs Jewish history

I’ve noticed a few articles on the to-do list are about Nazi Germany during World War II. One such article is about a V2 Rocket launch site. Are these articles really relevant to this project? Yes, the Holocaust certainly falls under the category of Jewish history, but specific aspects of German military tactics and technology surely fall under the more general category of WW2 history. Talk:1947–1949_Palestine_war#Vote (after reading Talk:1947–1949 Palestine war/Name)

In short, for more there a decade there is a problem with the titles of three articles: 1947–1949 Palestine war, 1947–1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine and 1948 Arab–Israeli War.
It was agreed that there is a need for a common prefix for these three articles, and a neutral title should be chosen. Before casting a vote, you are encouraged to donate 10 minutes of your time and read Talk:1947–1949 Palestine war/Name to understand the background of this long discussion. Who is (or is this person notable) “A. Leyelles” pseudonym “A. Glanz”

I was reading an old encyclopedia regarding the Yiddish language and I came across a name that I was not able to find through any google searches. Was wondering if anyone here has resources or books that says more about this person, and if deemed notable, I would be happy to add him to the missing writers/poets section. All I have is the two names, the fact that he was born in 1880, and lived past 1960 (encyclopedia was published in 1963) and he wrote poetry. I was curious to find out more and was surprised that I wasn’t able to find anything online. Calaka (talk) 17:09, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Identifying who is Jewish

I was wondering how do you define who is Jewish on Wikipedia since being Jewish seems to cross between religious and ethnic/cultural categories (i left the same post on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism). What would be sufficient sourcing? I have searched all the relevant help pages but cannot seem to find a definitive answer. Assigning religious identity to living people requires self-identification (Wikipedia:BLPCAT) while deceased people may be identified without self-identification (e.g. "services were held at Temple xxxx"). Being Jewish as an ethnicity does not seem to require such a high hurdle (Wikipedia:ETHNICRACECAT). I was told that in order to designate a person as Jewish I would need multiple irrevocable sources that specifically state that the reference is referring to ethnicity in order to include. As most citations do not specify whether the subject is Jewish by faith or descent, they would not be sufficient. For example, Edits to Maurice Kremer (1824–1907) have been removed since I do not have multiple sources and the one I do have does not specify whether it refers to religion or ethnicity.

  • "Maurice Kremer: Very Early Pioneer Jewish Merchant and Civil Servant of Los Angeles". Jewish Museum of the American West. Retrieved April 9, 2018.

and Evelyn Danzig Haas have been removed despite having an interview where she states she was confirmed and her parents attended temple during the high holy days

and despite her funeral being held at Congregation Emanu-El (San Francisco)

For living people, I am told that I need to demonstrate a verified consensus of reliable sources that indicate that their being Jewish is key to their notability in addition to self-identification. see Bruce Berkowitz with three sources deemed insufficient

If this is the standard, it seems that there will be very few Jewish biographies left (I was perusing "Jewish writers" and very few would stand up to this level of scrutiny).Patapsco913 (talk) 14:21, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

History section of Jews article needs revamped / rewritten

The 'History' subsection of the Jews article only covers Jewish history up to Babylon and Rome. Obviously, this is incomplete. It is missing 1900 years of Jewish history - the Middle Ages, modern times, the Holocaust, the establishment of Israel, etc etc etc.

There's been some discussion of this on the talk page. I tried to revamp the section, but I don't have the necessary knowledge (or time) to do it right. But having the main Wiki article on Jews not mention anything after 96 AD is not an acceptable state. I figured you guys were the right place to bring this issue for discussion and correction. I've noticed that many Holocaust-related articles seem to apply the term sonderkommando to any prisoner in an extermination camp. As far as I understand, the term is normally used to refer specifically to Jewish prisoners who were forced to assist the gassing and cremation process. I've been removing the term where it doesn't seem appropriate, but I wanted to leave a comment here in case there is an alternative usage of the term that I might just be unaware of.
