Stefanos Tsitsipas was the defending champion, but he was eliminated from the competition in the round robin.[1]

Novak Djokovic was attempting to equal the record of most ATP World Tour Finals wins (6), held by Roger Federer, but he was defeated in the semifinals by Dominic Thiem. This defeat means that, for the fifth consecutive year, there will be a new ATP Final winner.

Rafael Nadal was attempting to become just the second male player, after Andre Agassi, to complete the Career Super Slam, but he was defeated in the semifinals by Daniil Medvedev.[2]

Andrey Rublev and Diego Schwartzman made their debut in the event.

Federer, ranked #5 in the world as of November 2020, is absent due to a knee injury.[3][4] This is the first time since 2016 that Federer is not present at the ATP Finals and only his second absense since 2001.
