The Tarragal caves are all shallow daylight chambers spread along a cliff. There is no likelihood of a continuous underground cave of even 100m. If the source is Chauncy, I suspect the reference must be to some other area in the district area, eg Bats Ridge, closer to Portland has extensive caves which could fit this description.
