McNally, also spelt MacNally, is a surname of Irish and Scottish origin. It is derived from the Gaelic Mac Con Uladh meaning 'son of the Hound of Ulster'. In County Mayo the family were of Norman origin.[1][2][3]
The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain (2016) lists two origins for the name, Mac an Fhailghigh ("son of the poor man") and, in Ulster, "may be an anglicized form of Mac Con Uladh";[4] its entry for McNaul (from Mac Con Uladh) says that "There has been some confusion with the much commoner name McNally."[5] The Dictionary of American family names (2022) gives both Mac an Fhailghigh and, in Ulster and Dublin, Mac Con Uladh.[6] The Oxford dictionary of family names of Ireland gives the origin Mac an Fhailghigh and adds "There is much confusion between anglicized forms of this name and those of McNaul ... and occasionally those of McNeilly." It lists McAnally and Nally as variants of McNally[7]
