Sheikh Nizar Rayan (or Rayyan) (1962 - January 1, 2009) was a top Hamas military commander who was killed during the 2008–2009 Israel-Gaza conflict which began in December 2008.
Rayan was born in Jabalia, Gaza[citation needed]. He held a PhD in Islamic studies and was a professor of Islamic law at the Islamic University in the Gaza Strip.[1][2]
An influential preacher at what is known in Jabalia as the "Mosque of martyrs", Rayan is reported to have mentored suicide bombers.[3] Israeli officials said he sent his own son on a suicide mission, which killed two Israelis at Eley Sinai.[4][5] After Hamas ceased suicide bombings against Israel, he advocated for their renewal.[2] Following the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin by an Israeli helicopter gunship in 2004, Rayan came to be considered as Hamas' top clerical authority.[6] Israeli media reports that Rayan was the director and financier of the Ashdod Port attack, which killed ten people.[6][5]
Rayan was killed in an Israeli airstrike on 1 January, 2009 during the 2008–2009 Israel-Gaza conflict.[7] The attack also killed his four wives and six of his seventeen children.[4] Israeli media reports that his family was warned before the attack, but did not leave the building.[6] According to the Israeli government, Rayan's house served as an arms and ammunition warehouse and as a Hamas communications center at the time of the attack.[6] The weapons stored within his house set off secondary explosions.[8]
Rayan was the most senior Hamas member killed since Sheik Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi were killed in Israeli airstrikes in 2004.[4]
