Terminator Genisys is a 2015 American science fiction action film directed by Alan Taylor and written by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. It is the fifth film in the Terminator series, and will act as a retcon to the series.[5] Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his role as the eponymous character, along with newcomers Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Lee Byung-hun and J. K. Simmons. The film was released by Paramount Pictures on July 1, 2015. In addition to showing in regular theaters, it will also be shown in 3D, Real 3D, and IMAX 3D.[6]

Plot

In the year 2029, John Connor, leader of the Resistance, leads the war against the machines. In the final Los Angeles offensive, he is notified by his army unit that Skynet will attack on two fronts — past and future, thereby changing warfare forever. Connor sets up two units, one to strike at Skynet's main defense grid, and a second (led by Kyle Reese and himself) to destroy Skynet's main weapon, a time machine hidden at a remote storage facility.

Before the Resistance can reach the machine, Skynet sends back a T-800 to the year 1984 to kill John's mother, Sarah Connor. Learning of this, Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect her. As Kyle floats in the machine's magnetic field, he receives fragments of memories belonging to his alternate 12-year-old self with young Sarah, including a cryptic warning of the events in 2017. Moments before Kyle disappears, he witnesses one of the Resistance fighters attacking John.

The T-800 arrives in 1984 Los Angeles, but is quickly dispatched by Sarah and "The Guardian", a reprogrammed T-800 (Model 101) with aged human tissue. Shortly after, Kyle is rescued from a T-1000 by Sarah and the Guardian. Kyle finds out that the original timeline has been altered: Sarah already knows about Skynet, Judgment Day, and Reese's role as her protector. After the T-1000 tracks the trio, they manage to lure it to a sewer where Sarah disintegrates it with acid.

Sarah then explains to Kyle that the Guardian was sent to protect her from the T-1000 back in 1973, where the Terminators' arrival had caused a fractured timeline that differs from Kyle's. After saving Sarah, the Guardian began training her to face her destiny. The Guardian has built a time machine similar to Skynet's and Sarah plans to use it with Kyle to travel to 1997 to change the events that would lead to Skynet's initial attack on humanity. However, Kyle, convinced that the future has changed because of his new memories, persuades Sarah and the Guardian that they should travel to 2017 instead. He believes that Skynet will begin its attack on that year of the altered timeline; Kyle and Sarah time-travel while their Guardian spends the next 33 years preparing for their arrival.

In 2017, Kyle and Sarah materialize in the middle of a busy highway and are apprehended by police. The Guardian watches from a distance and follows them to a hospital. While being treated for injuries, Sarah and Kyle learn about "Genisys", a soon-to-be-unveiled operating system that will be used on every computer system worldwide: they realize that it is Skynet's precursor. She and Kyle are then rescued by their son, John Connor. As he leads the pair to a parking garage, the Guardian appears and shoots John, who revives himself, revealing himself to be a nanomachine hybrid. John explains that shortly after Kyle was sent back, he was infected by a T-5000, and was subsequently transformed. His mission here is to ensure that the Cyberdyne Systems Corporation would receive Skynet's technology and secure its rise. John, now the T-3000, tries to convince Sarah and Kyle to join the machines and end the conflict, but they refuse. After a brief battle, the T-3000 is temporarily incapacitated with an MRI machine.

The Guardian takes Kyle and Sarah to a safe house near the Golden Gate Bridge, where they make final preparations to destroy the Cyberdyne's Genisys mainframe before it comes online. The T-3000 pursues them to the Golden Gate Bridge, where Kyle, Sarah, and the Guardian are all taken into police custody. While awaiting interrogation, the trio is freed by Detective O'Brien, who discovers that Kyle and Sarah are time-travelers. He thanks them for saving his life from the T-1000's attack back in 1984. The three hijack a helicopter on the rooftop and head toward the Cyberdyne's San Francisco headquarters, with the T-3000 in close pursuit. During the airborne chase, the Guardian dive bombs into the T-3000's helicopter, causing it to crash.

Emerging from the helicopter crash, the T-3000 enters the Cyberdyne complex and advances the countdown mechanism from 13 hours to 15 minutes. As Genisys begins to gain sentience, the Guardian, Kyle and Sarah plant bombs at key points in the facility while holding off the T-3000. After a lengthy battle, the Guardian traps the T-3000 in the magnetic field of the prototype time machine and destroys it, but not before the T-3000 manages to throw the Guardian into a vat of mimetic polyalloy liquid just beneath the magnetic field. Kyle and Sarah manage to reach a bunker beneath the facility moments before the time machine explodes, setting off the bombs, and preventing Genisys from coming online. The Guardian, now upgraded with mimetic polyalloy components, appears and helps them find a way out of the debris.

Later, the trio travel to young Kyle's home, where they repeat the warning about Genisys to young Kyle, ensuring the events leading to their arrival. Sarah is relieved believing that she is now free to choose what to do with her future. She decides to stay with Kyle. In a post-credits scene, it is revealed that the Genisys system core was located in a hidden subterranean chamber and has survived the explosion.

Development

While Terminator Salvation was initially intended to begin a new trilogy, production on a fifth film was put on pause as a result of legal issues and the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by The Halcyon Company.[23][24][25] By late September 2009, the rights to the franchise were once again up for sale as The Halcyon Company tried to emerge from bankruptcy.[26] Late the following month, Halcyon announced it would auction off the rights to future Terminator material and was seeking $60 million to $70 million, although the only offer was made by filmmaker Joss Whedon for $10,000.[27] In December 2009, Halcyon issued a statement saying that it was looking at various options, including a sale and refinancing of the rights, with an announcement on the outcome no later than February 1, 2010.[28] On February 8, 2010, an auction was held for the Terminator rights. After studios Sony Pictures and Lions Gate Entertainment bid separately, Pacificor, the hedge fund that pushed Halcyon into bankruptcy, made a deal for $29.5 million.[29] In May 2010, Pacificor hired an agency to sell off the rights to the franchise.[30]

By August 2010, a new Terminator film was being developed. It was not to be a direct sequel to Salvation, but rather a 3D animated reboot of the series, titled Terminator 3000 and to be shot by Hannover House. However, Pacificor had not given any official license to Hannover House to develop a film.[31] In February 2011, Universal Studios was considering a fifth Terminator film, with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning in the title role, Justin Lin directing, and Chris Morgan as screenwriter.[32] Within two months, a Terminator project with Schwarzenegger, Lin and producer Robert W. Cort attached, but no screenwriter, was circulating among studios including Universal, Sony, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS Films.[33]

By May 2011, Megan Ellison and her production company Annapurna Pictures had won the rights at auction to make at least two more Terminator films, including Terminator 5.[34] On December 4, 2012, the deal was finally closed, with possible merchandise to include TV projects and video games. Ellison said she and her brother David Ellison were "starting from scratch as they seek out a screenwriter to plot the end".[35] Now titled Terminator: Genesis,[36] the film was being produced by Megan Ellison, with David Ellison of Skydance Productions. The executive producers were Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake. Laeta Kalorgridis and Patrick Lussier were commissioned to write the screenplay.[37]

Paramount Pictures was negotiating to distribute the film with Laeta Kalogridis (screenwriter of Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (screenwriter of Dracula 2000 and Drive Angry) writing the script. The film was left without a director as Justin Lin, who was originally in discussions to direct, chose to direct Fast & Furious 6 instead.[38] By June 27, 2013, Paramount had pushed the film's release date back from June 26, 2015, to July 1, 2015.[39] By September 2013, Alan Taylor was in talks to direct the film, after Rian Johnson and Denis Villeneuve had been considered and after a deal with Ang Lee could not be reached.[40] By January 2014, Annapurna was no longer funding the film and Megan Ellison, instead, will serve as executive producer.[41]

During an interview, the director of the first two Terminator films, James Cameron, admitted that he had been asked to be involved in the film by Megan Ellison. Cameron later had held several meetings with David Ellison, where they discussed Arnold Schwarzenegger's role and how to stay true to the original T-800 character.[42] On August 6, 2014, Schwarzenegger posted a picture on his Twitter account of himself sitting in a production chair on set. The picture revealed the correct spelling of the film's title Terminator Genisys.[43] After having watched the film's prerelease screening, Cameron unequivocally voices his support for Terminator Genisys, characterizing it "as being extremely respectful of the first two movies" and counting it as the official third film in the franchise.[44]

Casting

On June 13, 2013, Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would be back for his fourth film as the Terminator/T-800.[45] By early November 2013, Garrett Hedlund, Tom Hardy, Taylor Kitsch, and Nicholas Hoult were being tested for the role of Kyle Reese.[46][47] By the following month, Jason Clarke had entered talks to play John Connor.[48] In November 2013, it was reported that Emilia Clarke, Tatiana Maslany, and Brie Larson were the finalists for the role of Sarah Connor;[49] the next month, Clarke was announced as having won the role.[50] In February 2014, the studio was considering Jai Courtney and Boyd Holbrook for Reese, and planning for the character to be in at least two films;[51] later that month, it was confirmed that Courtney was cast.[52] On March 13, 2014, it was reported that J. K. Simmons was in talks for a role as a weary and alcoholic detective who has followed a bizarre case involving Sarah Connor and robots for more than three decades.[14] On March 25, 2014, Schwarzenegger revealed that he is indeed playing a Terminator character, in which human tissue has aged.[53] On March 28, 2014, it was announced that Dayo Okeniyi was cast as Danny Dyson.[54] On March 31, 2014, it was announced that Lee Byung-hun was cast in a lead role, also Michael Gladis and Sandrine Holt joined the cast.[55] On May 2, 2014, Matt Smith joined the cast of the film in a major role.[56] On July 10, 2014, Douglas Smith joined the cast of the film.[57]

Filming

Principal photography began on April 21, 2014 in New Orleans, and ended on August 6, 2014 in San Francisco.[58][59][60] Legacy Effects, successor to Stan Winston Studio, created the Terminator robotic and make-up effects, led by John Rosengrant who had worked on the previous four Terminator films. However, Jeff Dawn, who was the lead make-up artist on the first three installments, did not return.[61][62] The production made an effort to have the film's cinematography match the visuals of the first two Terminator films; sequences set in the year 1984 favoured colors and tones of blues, greens and blacks in order to match the look of The Terminator, while scenes set during the future war against the machines were modelled after such scenes from Terminator 2: Judgment Day.[63]

For the IMAX 3D release, the film was remastered using IMAX DMR technology to create the 3D effects and high resolution film print.[64]

Release

Marketing

On December 2, 2014, Paramount released the first motion poster for the film, showing a T-800 disintegrating into dust before the logo appears. A trailer preview was released the following day, showing brief clips that reveal various sequences, a pop-music soundtrack (a break from past Terminator releases), somewhat forced-looking camera motion in aerial effect sequences and a first look at the color-grading used to invoke the look of past films. The full trailer debuted on December 4.[66]

WWE's WrestleMania 31 event on March 29, 2015 promoted the film with an elaborate entrance stage for Triple H in his match against Sting. The stage featured Triple H donning a Terminator-style outfit and a video of Schwarzenegger telling fans that "Judgment Day is here. It's time to play the game."[67]

On June 14, 2015, Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton where an advanced screening of Terminator Genisys was presented.[68] On June 16, 2015, the mobile navigation app Waze added the voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the role of a Terminator, as an option for the voice providing users with turn-by-turn voice navigation and alerts.[69] On June 19, 2015, Schwarzenegger and Clarke were featured on The Graham Norton Show to promote the movie.[70] Rapidly viral with millions of views went a clip on YouTube showing a prank for charity (ASAS) by Arnold Schwarzenegger at Madame Tussauds Hollywood acting as a wax model that then came to life.[71]

Several YouTube personalities starred alongside Schwarzenegger in a YouTube miniseries released on June 22, 2015, entitled Terminator Genisys: The YouTube Chronicles.[72] Consisting of videos uploaded by Machinima, Toby Turner, and Lilly Singh, the series also featured Olga Kay, Sean Klitzner, Lloyd Ahlquist, and Matthew Santoro, among others.[73]

On June 24, Schwarzenegger spoke to the visitors of an early fan screening of the movie in New York City that had been announced on Reddit and was followed by an interview and selfie-session with Arnold for everyone.[74]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, Terminator Genisys opened simultaneously with the drama-comedy Magic Mike XXL across 3,700 theaters, with Tuesday night showings beginning at 7 pm across 2,700 theaters. The two aforementioned film, along with the holdovers over Jurassic World and Inside Out, are all projected to earn around $45–50 million for the Independence Day weekend and around $27–30 million over the three day weekend.[75] Box office pundits noted that Terminator Genisys will have to compete with Jurassic World, as well as Ted 2 to some extent, for male attention and that the film will have the upperhand in comparison to Magic Mike XXL considering the film's budget, its release in IMAX format, and of relaunching the storied sci-fi franchise, much as Jurassic World has done for its series.[2] It made $2.3 million from its Tuesday night showings, which is the highest Tuesday night run for Paramount Pictures (breaking Hercules' record).[4][76]

The film was released in 10 countries ahead of its North American debut starting from June 25, 2015, earning $8.4 million in its opening weekend. It had the biggest opening in the franchise and the best for Schwarzenegger in Singapore ($1.4 million) and Colombia ($1.3 million), both of which were above the opening of Terminator Salvation. Likewise, the film also went number one in Peru, Vietnam and Turkey.[77]

Critical response

Terminator Genisys has received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 25%, based on 209 reviews. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 39 out of 100, based on 39 critics indicating "negative" reviews .[78] In CinemaScore polls, cinema audiences gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.[79]

On the other hand, Michael O' Sullivan of the Washington Post reviewed the film favorably, stating that "Genisys goes back to what made the franchise work in the first place: not the machine inside the man, but vice versa".[80] Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair also gives the film a positive review, claiming that it "makes a surprisingly compelling case" for itself.[81] Screen International complimented the pacing of the film, along with its action.[82] Daily Mail also reviewed the film positively, rating it 4 out of 5 stars, claiming that Schwarzenegger and the franchise is "back with a bang".[83] Rolling Stone was also among those who reviewed the film positively, awarding it 3 out of 4 stars.[84]

Sequels

On September 5, 2014, Paramount announced that Terminator Genisys would be the first film in a new stand-alone trilogy, with two sequels scheduled for release on May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018.[85][86] On February 24, 2015, Schwarzenegger confirmed that he will return for the first sequel.[87]
