Don't Breathe is a 2016 American horror thriller film directed by Fede Alvarez and written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. The film stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, Stephen Lang and Jane Graves.

The film was produced by Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe. The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2016, and was theatrically released on August 26, 2016, by Screen Gems and Stage 6 Films.

Plot

Rocky, Alex, and Money are three Detroit delinquents who make a living by breaking into homes secured by Alex's father's security company and selling the items they steal. However, the person buying the stolen goods from Money doesn't give them a fair price, and not nearly enough to fund Rocky's dream of moving to California with her little sister Diddy to escape her neglectful mother Ginger. Money receives a tip that an Army veteran (credited as the Blind Man, but actually named Norman Nordstrom according to Alvarez[4]) living in an abandoned Detroit neighborhood has at least $300,000 in cash in his house; it was given to him as a settlement after Rebecca, a wealthy young woman, killed his daughter in a car accident. After some deliberation, the three decide to break into the house at night, after staking it out during the day and discovering that the man is in fact blind.

That night, the three approach the house and drug the Blind Man's dog. Finding all the entrances locked, Rocky enters the house through a small window and lets the other two in. The group searches the house for the money but is unable to find it; assuming it must be behind a locked door, Money shoots the lock. The resulting noise wakes up the Blind Man, who quickly disarms Money and kills him with his own gun. Rocky hides in a closet, where she witnesses the Blind Man open a safe to check on his money. After he leaves, Alex finds Rocky in the closet, and the two open the safe and take the money, amazed to discover at least $1 million inside. Meanwhile, the Blind Man finds Rocky's shoes along with Money's downstairs, and realizes that Money was not the only intruder.

Rocky and Alex evade the Blind Man and find a door leading to the basement. While running for a storm cellar door to let them out, they are surprised by a restrained, gagged woman in a homemade padded cell. She shows them a newspaper article stating that Rebeca was found innocent after killing the Blind Man's daughter thanks to her family's wealth; Rocky and Alex realize that she is Rebecca, held captive by the Blind Man. They find a set of keys in another safe, unlock her, and run for the storm cellar door, only to be surprised by the Blind Man, who shoots at Rocky and Alex with Money's gun, but mistakenly kills Rebecca instead. Rocky and Alex escape back into the cellar while the Blind Man, enraged at Rebecca's death, shuts off the lights, saying "Now you see what I see". After a struggle, Alex knocks out the Blind Man, and Rocky follows him through the dark back up to the house.

Finding their exits blocked, Rocky attempts to escape the house through the ventilation system, while Blind Man's dog recovers from the drugs and attacks Alex, who falls out of a window onto a skylight. The awakened Blind Man shoots the skylight, sending Alex falling through, and drags him into his utility room, where after a brief struggle stabs at him with a pair of pruning shears. Meanwhile, the dog pursues Rocky through the vents, and she is captured by the Blind Man. She wakes up restrained in the basement, where the Blind Man reveals that Rebecca was carrying his child in order to replace the one she killed (explaining why he was so distraught at her death). The Blind Man says that she willingly did so (although this is unlikely considering her confinement) and had promised to release her when the child was born. He says that Rocky must take Rebecca's place, since her actions resulted in her death, and give him a child, after which he will let her go. He is about to forcibly artificially inseminate Rocky with a turkey baster when Alex - who had watched the Blind Man stab Money's corpse, thinking it was Alex - knocks him out again and handcuffs him.

Alex wants to call the police, even though their blood is all over the house, but Rocky says that they will not be able to keep the money, so they attempt to leave through the front door. However, The Blind Man reawakens, escapes his restraints and shoots Alex fatally, but Rocky escapes outside, pursued by the dog. Although she manages to trap the dog in her car trunk, she is captured again by the Blind Man and brought back to his house. Rocky disorients the Blind Man by setting off his house's loud alarm system, then beats him with a crowbar and pushes him into the basement, knocking him unconscious, and flees just as the police arrives.

With the money, Rocky prepares to leave Detroit on a train to Los Angeles with Diddy. Before boarding the train, she sees a news report stating that the Blind Man killed two intruders (Alex and Money) in his house and is in stable condition in the hospital. The newscast states that, for some reason, the Blind Man did not report any stolen goods. The film ends as Rocky and Diddy leave through the departures gate.

Cast

Production

Fede Alvarez noted that making the film was, in some ways, a reaction to his debut film Evil Dead, specifically the criticisms that the film had too much blood, focused too much on shocking the audience, and was a remake. In contrast, Alvarez decided to make Don't Breathe, an original story that contained less blood and focused more on suspense over shocking audiences.[8] He wanted to avoid making a film dealing with the supernatural, as he felt that was too trendy.[8] Choosing to make the antagonist blind was a result of deliberately taking abilities away from him; Alvarez explained, "Sometimes you naturally give them powers and make them more menacing than a normal person, so we thought what if we do the other way around and take his eyes out and make him a blind person."[8]

On May 1, 2015, Daniel Zovatto joined the cast.[7] On May 22, 2015, Dylan Minnette was cast in the film, and on June 18, 2015, Jane Levy and Stephen Lang joined the cast. Principal photography began on June 29, 2015.[9] Though the film is set in Detroit, it was primarily shot in Hungary; only a few views of Detroit were filmed there.[2] Alvarez estimated that the film cost roughly half as much as Evil Dead, and welcomed the change, as it allowed for less studio interference.[8]

Reception

Box office

Don't Breathe was released in the United States and Canada on August 26, 2016, and was originally projected to gross $11–14 million from 3,051 theaters in its opening weekend, with some estimates going as high as $20 million,[11][12] and many publications noting it could be the first film to dethrone Suicide Squad from the top of the box office.[13] It made $1.9 million from Thursday night preview screenings, at 2,500 theaters,[14][15] and $10 million on its opening day.[16] It fell just 1% on its second day that is on Saturday, earning an estimated $9.9 million which is extremely an amazing hold for an R-rated horror movie as they tend to be more or less front-loaded (earn big on its first day and drop tremendously from its second day onwards). By comparison to other horror films of the year, Lights Out had a drop of 22%, while The Conjuring 2 fell by -15%.

Critical response

Don't Breathe has received positive reviews from critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an approval rating of 87%, based on 106 reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Don't Breathe smartly twists its sturdy premise to offer a satisfyingly tense, chilling addition to the home invasion genre that's all the more effective for its simplicity."[17] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating, the film has a score of 71 out of 100, based on 38 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale.[19]

Dennis Harvey of Variety called Don't Breathe "a muscular exercise in brutal, relentless peril that should please genre fans."[2] Jim Vejvoda of IGN awarded 8.8/10 and wrote, "Director Fede Alvarez delivers a lean, very mean thrill ride with Don't Breathe, tapping into several primal human fears and further establishing himself as one of the genre filmmakers to keep an eye on in the years ahead."[20] Peter Travers gave the film 3 out 4 stars, writing: "This is some weird, twisted [stuff]. Don't groan when I say Don't Breathe is a home-invasion thriller. Director Fede Alvarez is as good as it gets when it comes to playing with things that go bump in the night."[21] Kyle Smith also gave the film 3 out of 4 stars, saying, "Apart from its thin characters and occasional trite moments, as well as a silly attempt to set up a sequel, Don't Breathe is just about perfect."[22] Amy Nicholson of MTV wrote in a positive review, "Alvarez knows the size of his ambitions. He's written one great ghoul, surrounded him with targets, and simply let him let rip."[23]
