Mojo Juju is an ARIA-nominated Australian musician, best-known for her breakthrough album Native Tongue. Her music spans a variety of genres including R'n'B, Hip-Hop, and Soul.

Early Life

Born Mojo Juju Ruiz de Luzuriaga in 1983, Mojo grew up in regional NSW.

Music

Mojo Juju & The Snake Oil Merchants

From 2006-2010, Mojo Juju fronted a band called Mojo Juju & The Snake Oil Merchants.[1] The band released two independent albums, Mojo Juju & The Snake Oil Merchants (2007) and Sellin' You Salvation (2009). A compilation of earlier material, Mojo Juju & The Snake Oil Merchants – Anthology, was released in 2015 on European label Off-Label Records.[2] This coincided with the release of German film Bestefreunde. The film soundtrack was composed entirely of songs from Mojo's back catalogue.

Mojo Juju

Mojo Juju released her eponymous debut solo album in 2012, on ABC Music. It was also released in Japan by P-Vine Records.

Her second solo album, Seeing Red/Feeling Blue, was released in 2015, and featured Hip-Hop producer Ptero Stylus at the helm. Following the release of the album, she was nominated for Best Female Artist in The Age Music Victoria Awards, with Seeing Red/Feeling Blue also nominated for Best Soul/R&B album.

Native Tongue

Mojo Juju's third studio album, Native Tongue, was released in August 2018 via ABC Music. Production was handled by a cast of producers including Joelistics, jnbo, Steven Schram, and Jamieson Shaw. The album explores Juju's own family history and personal experiences.[3]

The Pasefika Vitoria Choir feature on the title track. Other artists on the album include Lay the Mystic, Mirrah, and Joshua Tavares.[4]

The music video for "Native Tongue" - directed by Claudia Sangiorgi and featuring the Djuki Mala dancers - won the 2018 J Award for Australian Music Video of the Year.[5]

Touring the album Native Tongue included her brother Steven Ruiz de Luzuriaga (drums) and Melbourne artist Yeo. Mojo Juju showcased at 2019 SXSW in Austin, USA

Other band members from previous tours have included Darcy McNulty (Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes) on Baritone Sax, and several members of Melbourne-based instrumental soul group The Cactus Channel (Lewis Coleman on keys, Henry Jenkins on bass, and occasionally Hudson Whitlock on drums/percussion).

Mojo has toured with Tony Joe White (US), Kitty, Daisy & Lewis (UK), Pink Martini (US), Imelda May (UK), Reverend Horton Heat (US), Nick Waterhouse (US),[6] and has also performed alongside Australian artists including C.W. Stoneking, Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ella Hooper, Harry Angus, Emma Donovan and more.[7]

Her music has been featured in a number of television shows including Underbelly: Razor, Underbelly: Squizzy and Roadtrip Nation.[8]

At the 2019 Australian Independent Awards, "Native Tongue" won Best Independent Single.[9]
