Problems with harvp markup

[edit]

Template {{harvp|Smith|2005|p=25}} (sample) is very useful, but unfortunately, it does not recognize already linked earlier editions of the same publication. Please help me fix this. Let's say, in the "References" section the work in question is marked with |year=2005 but also |orig-year=2000. Wikipedia is a collaborative project. Different editors can refer to different prints of the same work. Therefore, {{harvp}} needs to recognize the "orig-year" parameter in the quoted citation. The hotlink works only for a single "year" parameter, with no other options. When {{harvp}} is used to mark the edition other than the last (for example 2000, instead of 2005, the hotlink to section "References" no longer works. Thanks in advance, Poeticbent talk 20:26, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Poeticbent: This can't be done simply with a change to Template:Harvp which these days is merely a wrapper for {{Harvard citation/core}}, which is itself a wrapper. You would also need changes to the citation template that has the |orig-year= parameter, you don't say which one but let's assume that you're using {{cite book}}. This itself is also a wrapper, so at the very least changes to Module:Footnotes and Module:Citation/CS1 would be required. This would in turn require wider discussion, probably at Help talk:Citation Style 1. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:38, 17 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for a prompt response, Redrose64. Much appreciated! And indeed, I was referring to the use of {{cite book}} in conjunction with Template:Harvp. From what you describe, it seems that the only solution is to change the year of the book "edition" in the original citation provided by a different Wikipedian, to make the link work again, assuming that the newer edition had the same material printed on the already given pages from the older one. Please see the discussion at Module talk:Footnotes § broken harv link reporting where a broken harv-link reporting scheme is proposed.
