Etymology

First attested in c. 1780 as Middle Hindi ساون (sāon /⁠sāvan⁠/), inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀯𑀡 (sāvaṇa), from Sanskrit श्रावण (śrā́vaṇa). Cognate with Bengali শাওন (śaōn), Gujarati સાવણ (sāvaṇ), Punjabi ساون / ਸਉਣ (sauṇa), and Sindhi سانوڻ / सांवणु (sā̃vaṇu). Compare Pashto ساوڼ (sāwaṇ).
