Inherited from Old Bengali *গৌংছা (gauṃchā) with influence from the partially related word মুছা (mucha, “to wipe”) (with extreme influence present in the above variant), from (Sanskritized as Sanskrit अङ्गोञ्छ (aṅgoñcha)) with aphaeresis, perhaps from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀅𑀗𑁆𑀕𑀯𑀼𑀜𑁆𑀙 (*aṅgavuñcha), from earlier *𑀅𑀗𑁆𑀕𑀧𑀼𑀜𑁆𑀙 (*aṅgapuñcha​, literally “body wiper”), from 𑀅𑀗𑁆𑀕 (aṅga, “limb; body”, from Sanskrit अङ्ग (aṅga)) +‎ *𑀧𑀼𑀜𑁆𑀙 (*puñcha, “to wipe”, from a substrate, whence also পোঁছা (pō̃cha)). Cognate with Kamta আংছা (aṅsa), Odia ଅଙ୍ଗୁଛା (aṅguchā), Hindi अंगोछा (aṅgochā), Nepali अङौछो (aṅaucho), Marathi अंग्छा (aṅgchā), Gujarati અંગુછૉ (aṅguchŏ), Punjabi ਅਙ੍ਗੋਚ੍ਛਾ (aṅgocchā).
