From Middle English thirttene, variant (through metathesis) of thrittene, from Old English þrēotīene, from Proto-Germanic *þritehun, compound of *þrīz (three) + *tehun (teen). Cognate with West Frisian trettjin, Dutch dertien, German dreizehn, Danish tretten.
