Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *to) : semantic 虫 (“insect”) + phonetic 朱 (OC *tjo). Originally a Pictogram (象形) of a spider. Later, '朱 (zhū)' was added to the pictograph to indicate sound. In small seal script, the character became written as the characters 鼄/𬹣 and 蛛.
