Etymology
From Middle English, partly an alteration of -ier; and partly from -yere, -iere, -ȝere, the suffix -er appended to words ending in ȝ or g. More at -ier, -er. From French -ier, from Latin -arius (“agentitive suffix”). Doublet of -ary.
