From Old Dutch *galga, from Proto-Germanic *galgô, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰalgʰ-, *ǵʰalg- (long switch, rod, shaft, pole, perch). Compare German Galgen, West Frisian galge, English gallows, Danish galge.
