Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Russian чернозём (černozjóm), "black soil", letter "ё (jo)" is usually written as "е (je)" in Russian, more accurately transliterated as "chernozyom", also compare Чернозе́мье (Černozémʹje) where "ё (jo)" is changed to "е (je)".
