Etymology

From Old French golpilz, gulpil, vorpil, volpil, from Vulgar Latin *vulpīculus, alteration of vulpēcula (fox kit), diminutive of vulpēs. Compare goupille. See also Old Italian volpiglio, Occitan volpìlh, Portuguese golpelha, Spanish vulpeja. Replaced by renard, by euphemism.
